Mobile, Alabama Building Permit Cost Calculator

Estimates permit cost in Mobile from the city's own published fee schedule — not a national average. Every figure is computed from a rule quoted verbatim from that document, and rules that cannot be computed honestly are shown as the published text instead of a number.

How this jurisdiction calculates the fee

The permit fee is based on the valuation of the work and is paid at the time of filing the application; on new construction and additions the valuation-based fee includes the building, electrical, plumbing, gas and mechanical permit fees. | 2026-09-25 (lane B run 1754) RE-VERIFIED VERBATIM, SOURCE CONFIRMED CURRENT, DUAL-SOURCE DISCREPANCY RE-CONFIRMED AND NOT RESOLVED. Ordinance 28-052 (adopted 11-8-2022, effective sixty days after adoption) is still the operative schedule: buildmobile.org links exactly this PDF as its fee schedule and publishes no successor. Every figure reads verbatim: minimum permit fee $25.00; $0-$1,000 no inspection "No Fee"; $0-$1,000 when inspection required $25.00; $1,001-$50,000 $5.50 per $1000 valuation; $50,001 and over $4.50 per $1000; permit issuance fee $1.00 on all permits. The ordinance's Plan Review table prints residential re-submittals at $50.00 / $100.00 / $200.00 / $500.00. The $51.00 / $101.00 / $201.00 / $501.00 figures this row also carries are from the separate Residential Plan Review Checklist and appear nowhere in the ordinance. Both are official City of Mobile documents and they disagree by one dollar on four lines. Both carried, each labelled with its source; a human must choose.

How this jurisdiction calculates the fee

Mobile has no deck-specific fee line. A deck is an alteration, repair or addition and is priced by the general building permit fee in the Building Codes Permit Fee Schedule Ordinance, 28-052: the fee is banded by the valuation of the work and charged per $1,000 of valuation, with a flat minimum permit fee and a nil-or-flat treatment of work valued at $1,000 or less depending on whether an inspection is required. A contract is required for alterations, renovations and repairs; where there is no contract the ordinance directs the department to the latest International Code Council building construction valuation. A permit issuance fee is added to every permit.

How this jurisdiction calculates the fee

Electrical permit fees are itemized by service size and by device and equipment counts, and are paid at the time of filing the application; electrical work in new buildings or additions is included in the building permit fee. UNRESOLVED READ 2026-09-11, NOT WRITTEN: two independent WebFetch reads of Ordinance 28-052 (the second asking for the Article Eight item 18 Appliances rows in full) both returned "Water Heater $25.00", against the $5.00 this row stores for the water heater appliance connection. The neighbouring rows came back distinct in both reads (Welding Machine Receptacle $6.00, Range $5.00, Dryer $5.00, and Ceiling fans $1.00 at item 10), so this does not look like the usual WebFetch column misalignment, but direct egress was refused by the agent proxy for the whole pass, so the figure was NOT changed and the row was NOT stamped. This is a suspected transcription defect in our row rather than a supersession: the cited ordinance is still Ord. 28-052 adopted 11-8-2022, and every other stored Mobile figure re-read clean against it. ONE pdftotext -layout read of this PDF closes it out.

How this jurisdiction calculates the fee

Ordinance 28-052, the Building Codes Permit Fee Schedule Ordinance, carries a dedicated Re-roofing Fee. It works in two steps: the roof area in squares is converted to a valuation at a set dollar figure per square, at one rate for residential and a higher one for commercial, and the permit fee is then charged per $1,000 of that valuation. A permit issuance fee is added to every permit. | 2026-09-25 (lane B run 1754) RE-VERIFIED VERBATIM. Ordinance 28-052 confirmed current (buildmobile.org links exactly this PDF and publishes no successor). The residential and commercial re-roofing lines read "Residential $125.00 per square / $5.00 per $1000 valuation" and "Commercial $150.00 per square / $5.00 per $1000 valuation"; minimum permit fee $25.00 and the $1.00 permit issuance fee both confirmed.

Ordinance 28-052 (21 pages) was read in full; it is still the operative schedule, buildmobile.org publishes no successor, and both stored figures re-read verbatim. The recorded one-dollar conflict between Ordinance 28-052 and the Residential Plan Review Checklist on four plan-review resubmittal lines is unchanged and still carried rather than resolved; no figure on this row depends on it.
