Garage Fire Separation — Drywall, Doors & the No-Direct-Opening Rule

The house-garage separation is not a fire wall — the IRC just wants a gypsum membrane and a decent door between the car and the living space. Table R302.6 carries the numbers.

Worth knowing

  • Taping/finishing of the garage-side gypsum is only required to maintain the membrane (fire blocking at joints per manufacturer) — cosmetic finish is not the code issue.
  • Attic access hatches in the garage ceiling must maintain the separation (gypsum-backed or rated hatch).
  • Water heaters in garages need ignition-source elevation (18 in.) only for non-FVIR appliances per M1307.3 — modern FVIR units are generally exempt, but impact protection (bollards) still applies where subject to vehicle damage.
  • A door directly from garage to bedroom is prohibited even with a rated door — plan the mudroom.
