Handrail & Guardrail Code — Heights, Grip Size & the 4-Inch Sphere

Handrails are for grip; guards are for falls. The IRC gives each its own trigger, height, and geometry — and ties them together with the 4-inch sphere rule.

Worth knowing

  • A 2×4 or 2×6 laid flat is not a graspable handrail.
  • The 30-in. guard trigger is measured within 36 in. horizontally of the edge — a deck stepping down a slope can need guards even if the deck edge itself is under 30 in.
  • Guards must resist the 200-lb load at the top in any direction — the common 4×4 notched-post detail usually fails this without hardware.
  • Handrail height on existing stairs is measured after new flooring — thick treads can push an old rail out of the 34–38 in. band.
