MUTCD Sign Height & Placement — Mounting, Offset & Retroreflectivity

Where a sign goes is standardized by Chapter 2A of the MUTCD, 11th Edition. The numbers crews use daily: 7 feet to the bottom of the sign in urban areas, 5 feet in rural areas, and every sign retroreflective or illuminated.

Worth knowing

  • The 11th Edition (December 2023) renumbered Chapter 2A — mounting height moved from the old §2A.18 to §2A.15, and lateral offset from §2A.19 to §2A.16. Check which edition your state has adopted.
  • States must adopt the national MUTCD (or a substantially-conforming state manual) within two years of a new edition.
  • Excessive signing is itself a violation of good practice — §2A.20 tells agencies to conserve sign use so important messages stand out.
  • Standard sign dimensions come from the FHWA "Standard Highway Signs" publication referenced in §2A.07.
