A.Signs.
1.Sign Types. Construct signs as follows:
a.Type B: Sheet aluminum with retroreflective sheeting background and a digitally pri nted, silk screened ink, or direct applied retroreflective or nonr eflective sheeting legend and border. Remove burrs and sharp edges after fabrication. Install on Type B, D, or E sign posts. for Highway Construction Page 501 of 715 b. Type C: Extruded aluminum panels with retroreflective sheeting background and a direct applied retroreflective or nonreflective legend and border. Use on multiple posts, or overhead sign structures . Install on Type A, B, or D sign posts.
c.Type E: ½ inch or ⅝ inch HDO plywood with retroreflective sheeting background and a digitally printed, silk -screened ink, direct applied retroreflective sheeting or nonreflective sheeting legend and border. Use ½ -inch thickness for signs sm aller than 96 inches by 48 inches. Use ⅝ - inch plywood for signs 96 inches by 48 inches or larger. Fill and sand voids in edges with wood filler then apply edge sealer.
2.Sign Sheeting. Apply sheeting and screen printing as follows:
a.Cleaning. Clean substrates, background sheeting, and film as recommended by the manufacturer before application of additional sheeting and films. Do not use cleaners that damage the surface.
b.Orientation. Orient retroreflective sheeting as recommended by the manu facturer.
c.Butt Splices. Use a maximum of 1 butt splice placed vertically or horizontally. Ensure 1/32 inch or smaller gap. Ensure the color and orientation of the sheeting match.
d.Cutting and Plotting. Provide letters, numbers, borders, and symbols with a smooth, regular outline.
e.Adherence. Ensure sheeting is free of cracks, discoloration, air pockets, and other flaws causing non-adherence.
f.Screen Printing. Screen print sign legends using transparent inks in accordance with the sheeting manufacturer’s matched component system (MCS). Provided screen- printed items with a uniform, and smooth, regular outline.
g.Retroreflectivity. Ensure the sheeting meets minimum MUTCD retroref lectivity requirements. Repair or replace devices found to be damaged or defective.
h.Pop Rivets. Pop rivets may be used to attach LOGO sign panels to a specific service sign. Pop rivets may be used to attach route shields to an existing highway sign .
i.Finish . Trim sheeting flush with the si gn edges. Wrap sheeting into sheeting grooves on extruded aluminum edges.
j.Storage and Transport . Store and ship finished signs with separation paper between the sign faces. Ensure no m ore than two (2) signs are stacked horizontally. Vertically store and ship when there are more than two (2) signs.
B.Sign Posts.
1.Steel Sign Post. Install breakaway features on steel sign posts. Ensure posts are pl umb.
2.Wood Sign Post. Construct sign post with proper breakaway features performed.
3.Foundation . Construct foundation and place, grade, and compact backfill and surfac e material.
C.Overhead Sign Structures .

Ensure for Highway Construction Page 502 of 71 5 the sign structure is designed as detailed in the AASHTO LRFD Specifications for St ructural Supports for Highway Signs, Luminaires, and Traffic Signals as follows:
a.Risk Category: Typical.
b.Fatigue Category: 1. Before fabrication, submit shop drawings and design calculations for approval. Allow 10 business days for review and approval. Submit as -built shop drawings . Ensure welds are performed as specified in 504.03.M.
2.Foundations. Construct foundations and place, grade, and compact backfill and surface material. Where a foundation hole cannot be augured, construct a formed cylindrical or square foundation. If solid rock is encountered, drill and grout reinforcing steel into the rock when approved. Install anchor bolts plumb within 1 degree. Use 3 nuts and 2 washers on each anchor bolt, 1 leveling nut and 1 washer below the base plate, and 2 nuts and 1 washer above the base plate. Ensure leveling nuts with washer bear against the underside of the base plate before tightening the top nuts. Tighten the lower top nut beyond snug- tight as specified in Table 616.03- 1. Tighten the upper top nut against the lower top nut snug- tight. Ensure at least 3 threads of the anchor bolt are visible above the second nut. Tighten bolts that are not anch or rods as specified in

504.03 L.2. Place and compact backfill as specified in 210.

D.Special Sign Installation. Install signs mounted on bridges, traffic control signals, and other locations. Install brackets, mounting system, and hardware to attach sign.
E.Department Supplied Signs. Install signs supplied by the Department.
F.Reinstall Sign Face. Store and reinstall or relocate signs that were previously removed under 203. Protect signs during r emoval, transport, and storage to prevent damage. Ensure that no more than two signs are stacked horizontally . Vertically store and ship when there are more than two signs. Reinstall signs with new hardware on new or reinstalled posts under the appropriate pay items . Install sign brackets and braces if applicable.
G.Reinstall Sign Post . Store and reinstall or relocate posts that were previously removed under 203 . Protect posts d uring removal, transport, and storage to prevent damage. for Highway Construction Page 503 of 715 Reinstall posts on new foundations with breakaway base and hardware. Install new signs or signs to be reinstalled under the appropriate pay items .
H.Reinstall Assembly. When indicated, store and reinstall or relocate sign assemblies that were previously removed under 203 . Protect signs and posts during removal, transport, and storage to prevent damage. Ensure that no more than two signs are stacked horizontally. Vertically store and ship when there are more than two signs. Repair or replace damaged signs. Reinstall signs with new hardware and posts. Install sign brackets and braces if applicable. Installation of foundations and new hardware and breakaway base is incidental .
I.Special Sign Install . Mount signs in a manner other than ground- mounted. Provide appropriate steel brackets or mounting - systems and all applicable hardware to attach sign. All equipment, tools, hardware, and mounts are incidental .
J.Flashing Beacon Sign. Install all electrical components along with new sign. Posts and braces will be paid under appropriate items.

616.04 Method of Measurement.

The Engineer will pay contract unit prices for acceptable quantities as follows:
