602.01 Description
This work is removing pipe culverts from the specified locations, salvaging, and storing, disposing of, or cleaning and re-laying the removed pipe.
602.02 Materials
1.Replacement Pipe. Replacement pipe for existing pipe not re-usable is specified in the contract.
2.Abandon Pipe. Use blown sand, pea gravel, or excavatable CLSM for fill material.
a.Blown sand must be clean, free draining, and free from organic or deleterious materials.
b.Pea gravel must be clean, uniformly graded, free from organic or deleterious materials, and 100% passing the ⅜ inch (9.5mm) sieve.
c.Furnish excavatable CLSM in accordance with Subsection 551.03.2(F)(1).
602.03 Construction Requirements
602.03.1 Culvert Removal
Remove pipe culverts without damaging the pipe. Replace pipe that is damaged by removal with equal lengths of pipe, at Contractor expense. The replacement pipe must be the same type and diameter and in equal or better condition than the removed pipe before it was damaged. Store removed pipe at the specified locations. Backfill pipe removal locations within the new roadway template section in accordance with Subsections 203.03.2 and 203.03.3 .
602.03.2 Relaying Culverts
Clean out pipe to be re-laid of dirt, rubbish, and other materials and relay in accordance with Section 603.
602.03.3 Restoration and Maintenance of Existing Pavement
Restore and maintain existing pavement structures disturbed during the removal or relaying of pipe culverts in accordance with Subsection 603.03.5.
602.03.4 Abandon Pipe
A.Fill and Abandon Pipe. Place fill material the entire length of the existing pipe to be abandoned so it is completely filled. Ensure that no obstruction or segment of collapsed pipe inhibits placement of fill material. Cap the ends of pipes to prevent material from escaping.
B.Plug Ends and Abandon Pipe. Place fill material into the pipe for a minimum distance of 10 feet (3 m) from each end and cap in a manner that prevents material from infiltrating the abandoned pipe. Crushing the ends is an acceptable means of capping pipes composed of ductile materials.
602.04 Method of Measurement
602.04.1 Remove Pipe Culverts
Pipe culvert removal is measured by the foot (m) of pipe removed. Excavation required to remove pipe culverts is not measured separately for payment. 602 – REMOVE AND RELAY PIPE CULVERT 2020 EDITION V5.1 602-2
602.04.2 Relay Pipe Culverts
Relay pipe culvert is measured by the foot (meter) along the flowline of the re-laid lengths. Excavation required to relay pipe culverts is not measured separately for payment.
602.04.3 Abandon Pipe
A.Fill and Abandon Pipe. This work is measured based on the volume of material required to fill existing pipes. The volume will be determined based on the nominal diameter and effective length of the pipe to calculate the cubic yards (m3) of material required.
B.Plug Ends and Abandon Pipe. This work is measured by each pipe once capping is complete.
602.05 Basis of Payment
Payment for the completed and accepted quantities is made under the following: Pay Item Pay Unit Fill and Abandon Pipe Cubic Yard (m3) Plug and Ends and Abandon Pipe Each Relay Pipe Culvert Foot (m) Remove Pipe Culvert Foot (m) Payment for all costs associated with excavation required for removing or relaying pipe culverts is included in the contract unit price per foot (m) of remove or relay pipe culvert.
