608.01 Description
This work is the construction of concrete sidewalks and the installation of Detectable Warning Devices (DWDs) at the locations shown in the contract.
608.02 Materials
Furnish materials in accordance with the following section and subsection requirements: Hydraulic Cement Concrete .................................... 551 Joint Materials ......................................................... 707.01 Reinforcing Steel ..................................................... 555 and 711.01 Use cast iron DWDs having a natural grey finish. Ensure gray iron castings are manufactured from iron conforming to ASTM A48 Class 30B, as noted in AASHTO M 306. Furnish DWDs listed on the QPL.
608.03 Construction Requirements
Construct concrete sidewalks as specified in the contract and as follows.
608.03.1 Subgrade and Forms
Excavate, shape, and compact the foundation to the specified width and grade. Place and compact aggregate base to the specified thickness. Use forms and form in accordance with Section 552 and Subsection 609.03.
608.03.2 Concrete
Furnish and place concrete in accordance with Section 551. Place reinforcing steel as specified. Dampen the foundation and forms immediately before placing concrete. Do not place concrete on a frozen foundation course or subgrade. Construct sidewalks in accordance with Subsections 501.03.15 and 501.03.16. For PCCP and sidewalks subject to traffic loads (i.e., approaches) refer to Subsection 501.03.13 before opening to traffic.
608.03.3 Detectable Warning Devices
A.General. Install DWDs as shown in the Detailed Drawings. If DWDs require cutting or modification, locate non-factory edges on the exterior side of DWD installation.
B.Retro-Fitting. Saw cut from existing sidewalk the minimum area required to allow installation. Remove the old sidewalk to full depth within the cut area. Place new concrete meeting Section 608 requirements and install DWD in accordance with manufacturer recommendations.
608.04 Method of Measurement
Concrete sidewalk is measured by the square yard (m2), including wheelchair ramps and concrete under detectable warning devices. DWDs are measured by the square yard (m2) installed and accepted. Retro-Fitting DWDs, removal of existing devices, and concrete sawing and removal are not measured separately for payment.
A.Contracts with Sidewalk Work Not in Conjunction with Roadway Reconstruction. Reinforcing steel, expansion joint material, bond breaker, excavation or embankment, 608 – CONCRETE SIDEWALKS 2020 EDITION V5.1 608-2 crushed gravel base, and disposal of material associated with the work are not measured for payment.
B.All Other Contracts. Reinforcing steel, expansion joint material, bond breaker, disposal of material, and crushed gravel base is not measured for payment. Excavation or embankment associated with the work is measured by the cubic yard (m3).
608.05 Basis of Payment
Payment for the completed and accepted quantities is made under the following: Pay Item Pay Unit DWD – Type 1 Square Yard (m2) Sidewalk-Concrete Square Yard (m2)
A.Contracts with Sidewalk Work Not in Conjunction with Roadway Reconstruction. The cost of reinforcing steel, expansion joint material, bond breaker, excavation or embankment, crushed gravel base, and disposal of material associated with the work are included in the contract unit price of sidewalk.
B.All Other Contracts. The cost of reinforcing steel, expansion joint material, bond breaker, crushed gravel base, and disposal of material associated with the work are included in the contract unit price of sidewalk. Excavation or embankment associated with the work is paid for in accordance with the specified type of earthwork.
