440.01 Asphalt Safety Edge

D.Seating of Rubblized Portland Cement Concrete Pavement Seat the broken concrete after rubblizing with at least three passes of a steel -wheel roller in the vibratory mode at a maximum speed of 4 mph [6 km/h], as approved by the Resi dent Engineer.
E.Leveling Course Place a hot mix asphalt leveling or base course as shown on the Plans, immediately following the pavement rubblizing and seating operations.

433.05 Method of Measuremen T

The Resident Engineer will measure Rubblizing Paveme nt by the width of the existing PCCP and the horizontal length along the centerline of each roadway or ramp.

433.06 Basis of Payment

The Department will pay for each pay item at the contract unit price per the specified pay unit as follows: Pay Item: Pay Unit: RUBBLIZING PAVEMENT Square Yard [Square Meter] The Department will pay for asphalt pavement patch removal and replacement with a traffic -bound surface course Type E in accordance with Section 402, "Traffic -Bound Surface C ourse." If the pavement cannot be rubblized, the Department will pay for removal of pavement and replacement with Aggregate Base Type A in accordance with Section 303, "Aggregate Base Type A.”

440.01 Description

The asphalt safety edge is a beveled pavement edge to help lessen the severity of roadway departures. When a driver drifts off the paved surface, the safety edge provides gr eater ease for re -entering the roadway, and reduces the risk of over steering and loss of control of the vehicle. Safety edge is required on asphalt concrete highway construction (permanent or temporary), on all routes, for all design speeds and types of t raffic, when the following conditions exists:  the roadway is an open section (no curb),  the increase in pavement thickness is 2" or greater, and  the paved shoulder width is 4 feet or less. With the Engineer’s approval, the safety edge may be constructed w hen the paved shoulder width is greater than 4 feet. ASPHALT SAFETY EDGE 440.06

440.02 Materials

Construct the safety edge using the same material used to construct the adjoining pavement or shoulder.

440.03 Equipment

Equip the paver to en sure a 30 ± 5 degree wedge along the outside edge(s) of the roadway (measured from the horizontal plane) is in place after final compaction of the final surface course. Use an approved mechanical device that will:  Apply compactive effort to the asphalt mi xture to eliminate objectionable voids as the mixture passes through the wedge device, and  Produce a wedge with a uniform texture, shape, and density while automatically adjusting to varying heights encountered along the roadway shoulder.

440.04 Constructi On Methods

When paving operations result in a drop off of greater than 2 inches at the outside edge(s), or as directed by the Engineer, attach a device to the paver screed to confine material at the end gate and extrude the asphalt ma terial in a wedge shape having an angle between 30 ± 5 degrees. Ensure the wedge is compacted sufficiently as to eliminate objectionable voids. Maintain contact between the device and road shoulder surface; and allow automatic transition to cross roads, driveways, and obstructions. Use the device to constrain the asphalt head, reducing the area and increasing the density of the extruded profile. The Engineer may allow short sections of handwork when necessary for transitions at driveways, intersections, interchanges, and bridges. Do not construct the safety edge at longitudinal joints in the pavement section. Safety edge shape can be constructed on each lift of asphalt, or on the full specified depth on the final lift.

440.05 Method of Measuremen T

Asphalt safety edge will not be measured for payment.

440.06 Basis of Payment

Include the cost of constructing the asphalt safety edge in the price bid for the asphalt concrete paving pay item(s) included in the contract. 501.01 Description

A.General This work consists of excavating material for the construction of major structures and backfilling, stockpiling, or disposing of excess excavated material. If not otherwise provided for in the Contract, provide equipment, a nd construct and remove necessary cofferdams, shoring, and water control systems for the excavation work. If the Contract does not include a separate pay item for such work, excavation work will include all necessary clearing and grubbing and the removal of existing structures within the area to be excavated. When backfilling, place necessary backfill material, stockpile excavated material that will be used in the backfill, and dispose of excess excavated material that will not be used in the project, unle ss otherwise specified in the Contract. Excavate and backfill in reasonably close conformity with the lines, grades, and typical cross sections shown on the Contract or as directed by the Engineer. Comply with applicable environmental regulations, includin g the United States Army Corp of Engineers 404 Permit, and Section 220, “Management of Erosion, Sedimentation, and Storm Water Pollution Prevention and Control.”
B.Classification The Department classifies excavation and backfill as follows: Unclassified Excavation Material, of whatever nature, removed to construct box culverts, channels, ditches at culvert inlets and outlets, and other ditches shown in the Plans in accordance with Section 202, “Earthwor k.” Structural Excavation, Unclassified Material, of whatever nature, removed below the level of Unclassified Excavation to construct box culverts. Substructure Excavation, Common Material removed to construct substructures, piers, and abutments, except ma terial classified as Substructure Excavation, Rock. Substructure Excavation, Rock Solid rock, redbed, shale, slate, or hard material that requires loosening or breaking by blasting, sledging, or drilling for the construction of substructures, piers, and ab utments. The Department will classify rock ledges above the foundation material and boulders or pieces of concrete with a volume of at least ½ yd³ [½ m³] as Substructure Excavation, Rock. Unclassified Backfill , Select Backfill , and Granular Backfill Suppl ying, placing, and compacting unclassified borrow, select borrow, and granular backfill material in accordance with Section 202, “Earthwork.”
