806.04 Poles and Mast Arms
806.01 Description
This work consists of providing and installing poles, mast arms, and pedestal poles for traffic signals and highway lighting.
806.02 Materials
Provide materials in accordance with Section 700, “Materials,” and the latest edition of the AASHTO Standard Specifications for Structural Supports of Highway Signs, Luminaires, and Traffic Signals .

806.04 Construction Methods
A.General Install high mast poles, as shown on the Plans, in acc ordance with Section 812, “High Mast Poles.” Unless the poles are on the QPL, submit manufacturer shop and design drawings, and calculations in accordance with Subsection 105.02, “Plans and Wo rking Drawings.” The Department will allow mounting of mast arms to the pole before erection. Protect the pole, mast arm, and finish from damage during erection. Repair damaged finish as approved by the Resident Engineer, at no additional cost to the De partment. Level anchor base poles with nuts or shims. The Department will not allow double nut leveling for poles with breakaway bases. Install and torque fasteners in accordance with the manufacturer’s recommendations. Cast structural castings in perman ent molds.
B.Poles Ensure the pole accommodates the mounting height of the luminaire or traffic signal as shown on the Plans. Uniformly taper round or multi -sided poles from bottom to top; pedestal poles do not require taper. Straighten and center poles on the longitudinal axis. Provide each pole with a reinforced hand hole and weatherproof cover unless otherwise required by the Contract. Install a removable pole cap on each shaft, except pedestal poles. Provide metallic poles with a grounding connecti on inside the base of the shaft, and ground as shown on the Plans.
C.Mast Arms Provide mast arms of the lengths shown on the Plans. BREAKAWAY BASES - HIGHWAY LIGHTING 807.02 Design luminaire mast arms to support a 50 lb [22.7 kg] luminaire with an effective projected area of 2. 0 ft² [0. 19 m²]. P rovide a smooth raceway for the wiring; each with a slip -fitter tenon. Design traffic signal mast arms to support the required signal heads shown on the Plans.

807.02 Materials
Provide materials in accordance with the fo llowing subsection and external references: Material: Subsection or External Reference: Cast Aluminum ASTM B 108, Alloy 356 T6 High Strength Fasteners 724.02 Galvanized Hardware AASHTO M 232 Galvanized Plates AASHTO M 111 Provide aluminum breakaway transformer bases cast in a permanent mold. Provide each base with a plastic door approved by the Traffic Engineer Division. Provide breakaway bases in accordance with the latest edi tion of the AASHTO Standard Specifications for Structural Supports for Highway Signs, Luminaires, and Traffic Signals , and as approved by the FHWA.
