Hydraulic Erosion Control Products HYDRAULIC EROSION CONTROL PRODUCTS

Part 1 — General

1.1 Section Includes

A.Hydraulic Erosion Control Products (HECP) used to reduce soil erosion on disturbed areas of a construction project .

1.4 Definitions

A.Hydraulic Erosion Control Products (HECP) – Biodegradable wood, wheat, straw or other natural fibrous material manufactured through thermal or mechanical process and generally pre -packaged with binding agent s which when mixed with water is applied hydraulically as a slurry to reduce soil erosion and aid in vegetation establishment .

1.5 Submittals

A.Authorized Products List (APL) Compliance Form for information.
B.HECP work plan for review, include the following:
1.Description of the measuring technique.
2.Calculated area to receive each Type of HECP
3.Product name, application rate and total quantity of each Type of HECP to be used. Refer to this Section, Paragraph 3.2 C.
4.Product name, application rate and total quantity of Tackifier for HECP Type 1, if required

1.6 Delivery, Storage, and Handling

A.Deliver material and products in original ultra violet (UV) and weather - resistant factory labeled packages showing the name of the manufacturer and product description.

Part 2 — Products

2.1 Hydraulic Erosion Control Products (Hecp)

2.2 General Requirements

A.All HECP must contain some type or combination of non- toxic additives such as tackifiers, flocculants, polymers, co- polymers or other binding agents as part of manufacturer packaging to satisfy requirements in Table 1 except as follows .
1.HECP Type 1 products which do not contain a pre- mixed tackifier require a tackifier to be field mixed into the HECP.
B.HECP shall not contain any germination or growth inhibiting factors.

2.3 Water

A.Free of dirt, silt and other detrimental matter.

2.4 Tackifier for Hecp Type 1

A.General
1.Nonflammable
2.Nontoxic to aquatic organisms.
3.Functional for a minimum of 180 days. Hydraulic Erosion Control Products
B.Guar -based tackifier
1.Derived from ground endosperm of guar seeds ( Cyamopsis tetragonolobus ) and treated with dispersant agents.
2.Required for HECP Type 1 products without tackifier at a rate of 50 lb per acre.
C.Psyllium -based tackifier
1.Manufactured from the finely ground muciloid coating of Plantago ovata or Plantago ispaghula seeds.
2.Will hydrate when mixed with water to form a slurry and produces a firm, resilient and rewettable membrane on the soil surface after application.
3.Required for HECP Type 1 products without tackifier at a rate of 100 lb per acre.
D.Starch -based tackifier
1.Typically derived from corn or potatoes in a non- ionic, cold -water soluble (pre- gelatinized) granular form.
2.Required for HECP Type 1 products without tackifier at a rate of 150 lb per acre.

Part 3 — Execution

3.1 Preparation

A.Complete required grading and topsoil placement in designated areas before applying HECP .
B.Measure the area to be stabilized with HECP to calculate the quantity of HECP required .
1.Coordinate with t he Engineer to determine acceptability of the measuring technique to be used before measuring the areas to be stabilized.
C.Time restrictions of HECP application:
1.Apply HECP within 24 hours after seeding .
2.Apply when soil is dry and rain is not forecasted to occur within 24-48 hours after HECP application.

3.2 Pre-Application Verification Test

A.Apply HECP to 100 yd 2 test area in the presence of the Engineer.

3.3 Hecp Application

A.Use HECP components pre- packed by the manufacturer.
B.Mix water and HECP according to the manufacturer’s recommendation.

D.Apply a uniform layer of HECP slurry from a minimum of two opposing directions to meet manufacturer ’s recommendation for installed thickness and ground coverage.
1.Verification test area may be used to visually verify quality of HECP application.
2.Remove overspray before the HECP slurry dries.
