PART 3 EXECUTION
3.1PREPARATION
A.Coordinate State Furnished Materials
1.Request the SRQ number from the Engineer four to six weeks
before ramp meter materials are needed.
2.Contact the Department’s Central Warehouse by calling (801) 965-
4060 at least 48 hours in advance to schedule pickup.
3.Receive materials at the warehouse, 4503 South 2700 West, Salt
Lake City, UT.
B.Contact the local electrical service provider at least 30 days before the
power connection date. Verify the exact location, voltage, procedure, and materials required by the local electrical service provider.
3.2CONSTRUCT POLE FOUNDATION
A.Refer to Section 02892 and SL Series Standard Drawings.
3.3SIGNAL POLE AND MAST ARM
A.Refer to Section 02892.
B.Apply rust, corrosion, and anti-seize protection compound to all threaded
assemblies by coating the mating surfaces.
C.Plumb steel pole to the vertical with all signal heads and signs installed.
3.4UNDERGROUND JUNCTION BOX
A.Refer to Section 13554.
3.5INSTALL WIRING
A.Refer to Section 16530.
B.Refer to Section 02892.
C.Mark cables in the ITS cabinet with vinyl electrical color-coding tape
according to Table 1. Refer to UL 510.
1.Number lanes from left to right in the direction of traffic including
shoulders, if they are used for metering.

3.6RAMP METER SIGN ASSEMBLY

B.Provide 15 ft of slack in 7-conductor, neatly coiled in adjacent junction
box.
3.7SIGNAL HEADS
A.Install louvered back plates on signal heads with the retroreflective tape
facing away from oncoming traffic.
1.Use state furnished screws to mount the back plates according to
manufacturer’s instructions.
3.8RAMP METER DETECTION
A.Loop Detection. Refer to Section 13591.
B.Radar Detection
1.Install, aim, and terminate radar detection at least 24-hours before
ramp meter turn-on.
2.Contact the Engineer for assistance with detection area locating.
3.Install auxiliary ground wire from the radar detection unit to the ITS
cabinet.
a.Attach wire to the radar unit exterior grounding lug with
forked spade and to the ground bus in the ITS cabinet.
3.9ITS INTEGRATION, INSPECTION, TESTING, AND ACCEPTANCE
A.Follow the integration, inspection, testing, and acceptance process
according to Section 13595.
