MUTCD D17-4: Truck and Passing Lane Signs

The D17-4 sign is covered in Section 2D.53 of the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices, 11th Edition. Below are the provisions from that section that describe when the sign is used and how it is placed.

What it means and when it is used

  • Guidance · Recommended (should)
    If an extra lane has been provided to the right-hand side of the travel lane for use by trucks and other slow- moving traffic, an Advance Truck Lane (D17-2) sign (see Figure 2D-25 ) should be installed in advance of the lane.
  • Guidance · Recommended (should)
    If a series of truck lanes is provided along a highway, a Next Truck Lane (D17-1) sign (see Figure 2D-25 ) should be installed after each truck lane segment.

Placement and mounting

  • Guidance · Recommended (should)
    If an extra lane has been provided to the left-hand side of the travel lane for passing slower moving vehicles in the travel lane, an Advance Passing Lane Advance (D17-4) sign (see Figure 2D-25 ) should be installed in advance of the lane.
  • Guidance · Recommended (should)
    If a series of passing lanes are provided along a highway, a Next Passing Lane (D17-3) sign (see Figure 2D-25 ) should be installed after each passing lane segment.
