MUTCD D4-1: Parking Area Guide Sign
The D4-1 sign is covered in Section 2D.47 of the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices, 11th Edition. Below are the provisions from that section that describe when the sign is used and how it is placed.
What it means and when it is used
- Option · Permitted (may)The Parking Area (D4-1) guide sign (see Figure 2D-14 ) may be used to show the direction to a nearby public parking area or parking facility.
- Standard · Required (shall)The smaller size of 18 x 15 inches for the Parking Area guide sign shall be limited to minor, low- speed streets.
Placement and mounting
- Guidance · Recommended (should)If used, the Parking Area guide sign should be installed on major thoroughfares at the nearest point of access to the parking facility and where it can advise drivers of a place to park. The sign should not be used more than four blocks from the parking area.
