MUTCD E7-1: Post-Interchange Distance Signs

The E7-1 sign is covered in Section 2E.48 of the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices, 11th Edition. Below are the provisions from that section that describe when the sign is used and how it is placed.

What it means and when it is used

  • Standard · Required (shall)
    If used, the Post-Interchange Distance sign (see Figure 2E-50) shall consist of a one-line, two-line, or three-line sign displaying the names of significant destination points and the distances to those points.   • Option · Permitted (may)

Placement and mounting

  • Guidance · Recommended (should)
    If a second line is used, it should be reserved for communities of general interest that are located on or immediately adjacent to the route or for major traffic generators along the route.
