MUTCD E7-5: Distance and Travel Time Sign and Comparative Travel Time Sign

The E7-5 sign is covered in Section 2E.50 of the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices, 11th Edition. Below are the provisions from that section that describe when the sign is used and how it is placed.

What it means and when it is used

    The Distance and Travel Time (E7-5) sign (see Figure 2E-52) shall display a major destination, landmark, or junction ; a distance message; and a travel time message, each on a separate line. The distance units shall be displayed in the distance message.     The Comparative Travel Time (E7-6) sign (see Figure 2E-52) shall display a major destination, landmark, or junction , and two alternative routes with travel time messages. Each alternative route and associated travel time message shall be on a separate line. The travel time shall be displayed in a changeable message element and the abbreviation MINS shall follow the changeable message element.

    Some locations might benefit from a travel time message displayed with the distance, or comparative travel times displayed for alternative routes to a common destination. These locations are often in advance of an urbanized area where interchanges become more closely spaced and/or in advance of a circumferential or other alternative route(s) where the road user can decide to divert depending on the destination.…

    Where used, the Distance and Travel Time sign should be located between interchanges and away from the sequence of interchange guide signs or other major signs.

    Where used, the Comparative Travel Time sign should be located in advance of the sequence of interchange guide signs to provide adequate time for the road user to decide whether to reroute.
