MUTCD E9-3a: Next Exits Signs
The E9-3a sign is covered in Section 2E.53 of the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices, 11th Edition. Below are the provisions from that section that describe when the sign is used and how it is placed.
What it means and when it is used
- Option · Permitted (may)Such regions or areas may be indicated by a Next Exits (E9-3 or E9-3a) sign (see Figure 2E-57) located in advance of the Advance guide sign or signs for the first interchange.
- Guidance · Recommended (should)The sign legend should identify the region or area followed by the words NEXT XX EXITS.
