MUTCD M1-8b: Non-Numbered Bicycle Route Signs

The M1-8b sign is covered in Section 9D.06 of the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices, 11th Edition. Below are the provisions from that section that describe when the sign is used and how it is placed.

What it means and when it is used

  • Standard · Required (shall)
    Except as provided in Paragraph 2 of this Section, Non-Numbered Bicycle Route (M1-8b and M1-8c) signs (see Figure 9D-1) used on roadways shall have a green background with a white border, and shall include words identifying the bicycle route or a legend consisting of words identifying the bicycle route and a pictograph or bicycle symbol.
  • Option · Permitted (may)
    Words identifying the bicycle route may be omitted on Non-Numbered Bicycle Route (M1-8b and M1-8c) signs where a pictograph includes the likeness of a bicycle that clearly identifies the route as a bicycle route.
