MUTCD M1-9: U.S. Bicycle Route Sign
The M1-9 sign is covered in Section 9D.07 of the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices, 11th Edition. Below are the provisions from that section that describe when the sign is used and how it is placed.
What it means and when it is used
- Guidance · Recommended (should)Where a designated bicycle route extends through two or more States, a coordinated submittal by the affected States for an assignment of a U.S. Bicycle Route number designation should be sent to the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials.
- Standard · Required (shall)The U.S. Bicycle Route (M1-9) sign (see Figure 9D-1) shall have a green legend and border with a white background and shall display the route designation as assigned by AASHTO.
