MUTCD M2-1P: Junction Auxiliary Plaque

The M2-1P sign is covered in Section 2D.13 of the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices, 11th Edition. Below are the provisions from that section that describe when the sign is used and how it is placed.

    The Junction (M2-1P) auxiliary plaque (see Figure 2D-5 ) shall display the abbreviated legend JCT and shall be mounted at the top of an assembly (see Section 2D.30) directly above the route sign, the sign for an alternative route (see Section 2D.17) that is part of the route designation, or the Cardinal Direction auxiliary plaque where access is available only to one direction of the intersected route.
