MUTCD R1-9: In-Street and Overhead Pedestrian and Trail Crossing Signs

The R1-9 sign is covered in Section 2B.20 of the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices, 11th Edition. Below are the provisions from that section that describe when the sign is used and how it is placed.

What it means and when it is used

    The In-Street Pedestrian Crossing (R1-6 or R1-6a) sign (see Figure 2B-2), In-Street Trail Crossing (R1-6d or R1-6e) sign (see Figure 2B-2), the Overhead Pedestrian Crossing (R1-9 or R1-9a) sign (see Figure 2B-2), or the Overhead Trail Crossing (R1-9d or R1-9e) sign (see Figure 2B-2) may be used to remind road users of laws regarding right-of-way at an unsignalized crosswalk. Placement and mounting

  • Option · Permitted (may)
    If used, In-Street Pedestrian or Trail Crossing signs shall only be placed in the roadway at the crosswalk location on the center line, on a median island, on a lane line, or on an edge line.
  • Option · Permitted (may)
    The In-Street Pedestrian or Trail Crossing sign shall not be post-mounted on the left-hand or right- hand side of the roadway.
  • Standard · Required (shall)
    If used, the Overhead Pedestrian or Trail Crossing sign shall be placed over the roadway at the crosswalk location.
