MUTCD R12-1: Weight Limit Signs

The R12-1 sign is covered in Section 2B.64 of the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices, 11th Edition. Below are the provisions from that section that describe when the sign is used and how it is placed.

What it means and when it is used

  • Standard · Required (shall)
    Weight limit signs (see Figure 2B-30 ) shall be used to indicate a section of highway or structure that has a vehicle weight restriction.
  • Guidance · Recommended (should)
    The units shown on any weight limit sign should be consistent within a State or region with respect to pounds or tons.

Placement and mounting

  • Support · Information
    A specialized h auling vehicle is a single unit truck with multiple closely-spaced axles. Examples include dump trucks, construction vehicles, solid waste trucks and other hauling trucks. Specialized hauling vehicles typically have 4 to 7 axles.
  • Standard · Required (shall)
    A weight limit sign (see Figure 2B-30 ) shall be located at the applicable section of highway or structure.
  • Standard · Required (shall)
    An additional weight limit sign, with an advisory distance or directional legend, shall be located in advance of the applicable section of highway or structure so that prohibited vehicles can detour or turn around prior to the limit zone.
