MUTCD R3-25: Jughandle Signs
The R3-25 sign is covered in Section 2B.35 of the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices, 11th Edition. Below are the provisions from that section that describe when the sign is used and how it is placed.
What it means and when it is used
- Standard · Required (shall)On multi-lane roadways, since road users generally anticipate that they need to be in the left-hand lane when approaching a location where they desire to turn left or make a U-turn, an ALL TURNS FROM RIGHT LANE (R3-23) or a U TURN FROM RIGHT LANE (R3-23a) sign (see Figure 2B-8 ) shall be installed in advance of the location to inform drivers that left turns and/or U-turns will be made from the right-hand lane.
- Option · Permitted (may)Where a median of sufficient width is available, supplemental regulatory or guide signs may also be placed on the left-hand side of the roadway.
Placement and mounting
- Standard · Required (shall)The R3-24 series sign with an upward diagonal arrow pointing to the right if the jughandle entrance is designed as an exit ramp (see Drawings A and B in Figure 2B-9 ), or the R3-25 series sign with a horizontal arrow pointing to the right if the jughandle entrance is designed as an intersection, shall be installed on the right-hand side of the roadway at the entrance to the jughandle.
