MUTCD R3-6: Optional Movement Lane Control Signs
The R3-6 sign is covered in Section 2B.29 of the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices, 11th Edition. Below are the provisions from that section that describe when the sign is used and how it is placed.
What it means and when it is used
- Standard · Required (shall)Optional Movement Lane Control (R3-6, R3-6a and R3-6b) signs (see Figure 2B-4 ), if used, shall be used for two or more movements from a specific lane or to emphasize permitted movements. The Optional Movement Lane Control sign shall be mounted overhead over the specific lane to which it applies.
- Standard · Required (shall)If used, the Optional Movement Lane Control signs shall indicate all permissible movements from specific lanes.
Placement and mounting
- Guidance · Recommended (should)If used, the Optional Movement Lane Control sign should be located overhead in advance of the intersection, such as near the upstream end of an adjacent mandatory movement lane, and/or overhead at the intersection where the regulation applies.
