MUTCD R5-1: DO NOT ENTER Sign
The R5-1 sign is covered in Section 2B.46 of the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices, 11th Edition. Below are the provisions from that section that describe when the sign is used and how it is placed.
What it means and when it is used
- Standard · Required (shall)The DO NOT ENTER (R5-1) sign (see Figure 2B-13 ) shall be used at the following locations: A. Where a two-way roadway becomes a one-way roadway (see Figu re 2B-18 ); B. The intersection of an interchange exit ramp with a crossroad as specified in Section 2B.48 (see Figu re 2B -15); C. The intersection of a channelized or turning roadway with a two-way undivided crossroad; and D. Except as provided in Paragraph 4 of…
- Guidance · Recommended (should)A DO NOT ENTER sign should be installed at other locations where additional emphasis is needed where wrong-way movements are prominent or where the intersecting angle of roadways is such that the visibility of ONE WAY signs alone does not sufficiently convey the restriction.
Placement and mounting
- Option · Permitted (may)A DO NOT ENTER sign may be installed at an intersection with a divided highway where the crossing functions as a single intersection as shown in Fig ure 2B-20.
- Guidance · Recommended (should)The DO NOT ENTER sign, if used, should be placed directly in view of a road user at the point where a road user could wrongly enter a divided highway, one-way roadway, or ramp. The sign should be mounted facing traffic that might enter the roadway or ramp in the wrong direction.
- Guidance · Recommended (should)At a crossing with a divided highway that functions as a single intersection; the sign, if used, should be placed on the outside edge side of the roadway facing traffic that might enter the roadway in the wrong direction.
