MUTCD R6-1: ONE WAY Signs

The R6-1 sign is covered in Section 2B.49 of the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices, 11th Edition. Below are the provisions from that section that describe when the sign is used and how it is placed.

What it means and when it is used

  • Standard · Required (shall)
    Except as provided in Paragraph 6 of this Section, the ONE WAY (R6-1 or R6-2) sign (see Figure 2B-13 ) shall be used to indicate streets or roadways upon which vehicular traffic is allowed to travel in one direction only.

    ONE WAY signs shall be placed parallel to the one-way street at all alleys and roadways that intersect one-way roadways as shown in Fig ure 2B-18.

Placement and mounting

    At the crossing of a roadway with a divided highway that functions as two separate intersections, ONE WAY signs shall be placed, visible to each crossroad approach, on the near right and far left corners of each intersection with the directional roadways (see Figu re 2B-19 ).
  • Standard · Required (shall)
    At the crossing of a roadway with a divided highway that functions as a single intersection Keep Right (R4-7) signs (see Section 2B.39) and/or ONE WAY signs shall be installed (see Figure 2B-20 ). If Keep Right signs are installed, they shall be placed as close as practicable to the approach ends of the medians and shall be visible to traffic on the divided highway and angled (as needed) toward the applicable…
  • Option · Permitted (may)
    At the crossing of a roadway with a divided highway, regardless of function as a single or separate intersections, ONE WAY signs may also be placed on the far right corner of the intersection as shown in Figures 2B-19 and 2B-20 .
