MUTCD R8-4: Emergency Restriction Signs
The R8-4 sign is covered in Section 2B.55 of the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices, 11th Edition. Below are the provisions from that section that describe when the sign is used and how it is placed.
What it means and when it is used
- Standard · Required (shall)Emergency Restriction signs (see Figure 2B-26) shall be rectangular and shall have a black legend and border on a white background.
- Option · Permitted (may)The EMERGENCY PARKING ONLY (R8-4) sign or the EMERGENCY STOPPING ONLY (R8-7) sign may be used to discourage or prohibit shoulder parking, particularly where scenic or other attractions create a tendency for road users to desire to stop temporarily.
