MUTCD R9-23: Two-Stage Bicycle Turn Box Regulatory Signing
The R9-23 sign is covered in Section 9B.18 of the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices, 11th Edition. Below are the provisions from that section that describe when the sign is used and how it is placed.
What it means and when it is used
- Standard · Required (shall)Where bicycles are required to use a two-stage bicycle turn box (see Figure 9B-5), the Two-Stage Bicycle Turn Box regulatory sign series (see Figure 9B-5) shall be used.
- Standard · Required (shall)Where bicycles are required to use a two-stage bicycle turn box, the Bicycles All Turns from Bike Lane (R9-23) or Bicycle Left Turn from Bike Lane (R9-23a) advance regulatory sign shall be mounted in advance of the intersection, and at least one Bicycle Turn Must Use Turn Box (R9-23b or R9-23c) sign shall be used at the int ersection.
Placement and mounting
- Standard · Required (shall)Where used, the Bicycle Turn Must Use Turn Box (R9-23b) sign shall be mounted at the near side of the intersection.
- Standard · Required (shall)Where used, the Bicycle Turn Must Use Turn Box location (R9-23c) sign shall be mounted at the far side of the intersection.
- Option · Permitted (may)If used, an appropriately sized Street Name (D3-1) sign (see Section 2D.45) may be installed below the All Turns from Bike Lane sign or Left Turn from Bike Lane sign to identify the crossroad where the turn box will be available.
