MUTCD R9-3: Pedestrian Crossing Signs

The R9-3 sign is covered in Section 2B.57 of the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices, 11th Edition. Below are the provisions from that section that describe when the sign is used and how it is placed.

What it means and when it is used

  • Option · Permitted (may)
    Pedestrian Crossing signs (see Figure 2B-27 ) may be used to limit pedestrian crossing to specific locations.
  • Standard · Required (shall)
    If used, Pedestrian Crossing signs shall be installed to face pedestrian approaches.

Placement and mounting

  • Option · Permitted (may)
    The NO PEDESTRIAN CROSSING (R9-3a) word message sign may be used as an alternate to the R9-3 symbol sign. The USE CROSSWALK (R9-3bP) supplemental plaque, along with an arrow, may be installed below either sign to designate the direction of the crossing.
  • Guidance · Recommended (should)
    The R9-3bP plaque should not be installed in combination with educational plaques.
