MUTCD R9-4a: WALK ON LEFT FACING TRAFFIC and No Hitchhiking Signs

The R9-4a sign is covered in Section 2B.56 of the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices, 11th Edition. Below are the provisions from that section that describe when the sign is used and how it is placed.

What it means and when it is used

  • Option · Permitted (may)
    The WALK ON LEFT FACING TRAFFIC (R9-1) sign (see Figure 2B-27) may be used on highways where no sidewalks are provided.
  • Guidance · Recommended (should)
    If used, the WALK ON LEFT FACING TRAFFIC sign should be installed on the right-hand side of the road where pedestrians walk on the pavement or shoulder in the absence of pedestrian pathways or sidewalks.
