MUTCD W13-20: Vehicle Speed Feedback Sign and Plaque

The W13-20 sign is covered in Section 2C.13 of the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices, 11th Edition. Below are the provisions from that section that describe when the sign is used and how it is placed.

What it means and when it is used

  • Option · Permitted (may)
    A Vehicle Speed Feedback (W13-20) sign or (W13-20aP) plaque (see Figure 2C-4 ) that displays the speed of an approaching vehicle to the vehicle operator may be used to provide warning to drivers of their speed in relation to either a speed limit (R2-1) sign or a horizontal alignment warning sign assembly with a posted advisory speed.
  • Standard · Required (shall)
    When used to display the speed of an approaching vehicle in relation to the posted speed limit, the Vehicle Speed Feedback (W13-20aP) plaque shall be mounted below a Speed Limit (R2-1) sign (see Section 2B.21).

Placement and mounting

  • Guidance · Recommended (should)
    The changeable portion of the Vehicle Speed Feedback legend should be approximately the same height, width, and stroke of those on the Speed Limit sign it supplements or is mounted below.
  • Guidance · Recommended (should)
