MUTCD W14-1: DEAD END, NO OUTLET, and ROAD ENDS Signs
The W14-1 sign is covered in Section 2C.24 of the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices, 11th Edition. Below are the provisions from that section that describe when the sign is used and how it is placed.
What it means and when it is used
- Option · Permitted (may)The DEAD END (W14-1) sign (see Figure 2C-6 ) may be used at the entrance to a single road or street that terminates without intersecting another street. The NO OUTLET (W14-2) sign (see Figure 2C-6 ) may be used at the entrance to a road or road network from which there is no other exit.
- Option · Permitted (may)DEAD END (W14-1a) or NO OUTLET (W14-2a) signs (see Figure 2C-6 ) may be used in combination with Street Name (D3-1) signs (see Section 2D.45) to warn turning traffic that the cross street ends in the direction indicated by the arrow.
Placement and mounting
- Guidance · Recommended (should)When the W14-1 or W14-2 sign is used, the sign should be posted as near as practicable to the entry point or at a sufficient advance distance to permit the road user to avoid the dead end or no outlet condition by turning at the nearest intersecting street.
