MUTCD W20-5: Lane Closed Signs
The W20-5 sign is covered in Section 6H.07 of the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices, 11th Edition. Below are the provisions from that section that describe when the sign is used and how it is placed.
What it means and when it is used
- Standard · Required (shall)The Lane(s) Closed sign (see Figure 6H-1 ) shall be used in advance of that point where one or more through lanes of a multi-lane roadway are closed.
- Standard · Required (shall)For a single lane closure, the Lane Closed (W20-5) sign (see Figure 6H-1 ) shall use the legend RIGHT (LEFT) LANE CLOSED. Where two or more adjacent lanes are closed, the W20-5a sign (see Figure 6H-1 ) shall use the legend XX RIGHT (LEFT) LANES CLOSED.
