MUTCD W8-4: Shoulder Signs
The W8-4 sign is covered in Section 2C.29 of the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices, 11th Edition. Below are the provisions from that section that describe when the sign is used and how it is placed.
What it means and when it is used
- Option · Permitted (may)The SOFT SHOULDER (W8-4) sign (see Figure 2C-7 ) may be used to warn of a soft shoulder condition.
- Option · Permitted (may)The LOW SHOULDER (W8-9) sign (see Figure 2C-7 ) may be used to warn of a shoulder condition where there is an elevation difference of 3 inches or less between the shoulder and the travel lane.
Placement and mounting
- Option · Permitted (may)A SHOULDER DROP-OFF (W8-17P) supplemental plaque (see Figure 2C-7 ) may be mounted below the W8-17 sign.
- Guidance · Recommended (should)Additional shoulder signs should be placed at appropriate intervals along the road where the condition continually exists.
