MUTCD W8-5: Surface Condition Signs
The W8-5 sign is covered in Section 2C.30 of the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices, 11th Edition. Below are the provisions from that section that describe when the sign is used and how it is placed.
What it means and when it is used
- Option · Permitted (may)The Slippery When Wet (W8-5) sign (see Figure 2C-7 ) may be used to warn of unexpected slippery conditions. Supplemental plaques (see Figure 2C-7 ) with legends such as ICE, WHEN WET, STEEL DECK, or EXCESS OIL may be used with the W8-5 sign to indicate the reason that the slippery conditions might be present.
- Option · Permitted (may)The LOOSE GRA VEL (W8-7) sign (see Figure 2C-7 ) may be used to warn of loose gravel on the roadway surface.
Placement and mounting
- Guidance · Recommended (should)When used, Surface Condition signs should be placed in advance of the beginning of the affected section (see Table 2C-3), and additional signs should be placed at appropriate intervals along the road where the condition exists.
