MUTCD W9-7: RIGHT LANE FOR EXIT ONLY Sign
The W9-7 sign is covered in Section 2C.50 of the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices, 11th Edition. Below are the provisions from that section that describe when the sign is used and how it is placed.
What it means and when it is used
- Option · Permitted (may)The RIGHT (LEFT) LANE FOR EXIT ONLY (W9-7) sign (see Figure 2C-11 ) may be used to provide advance warning to road users that traffic in the right-hand (left-hand) lane of a roadway will be required to depart the roadway at the next exit.
- Guidance · Recommended (should)If used, the W9-7 sign should be installed upstream from the first overhead guide sign that contains an EXIT ONLY sign panel or upstream from the first RIGHT (LEFT) LANE MUST EXIT (R3-33) regulatory sign, if used, whichever is farther upstream from the exit.
