IECC — International Energy Conservation Code2018 IECC — adopted by reference (with ASHRAE 62.2-2016 and Alaska-specific amendments) as the ALASKA BUILDING ENERGY EFFICIENCY STANDARD (BEES). IMPORTANT SCOPE LIMIT: this is NOT a statewide construction energy code. Alaska has no statewide mandatory energy code for private construction; BEES binds only where Alaska Housing Finance Corporation or other state financial assistance is used, and for state-funded public-building retrofits. Municipalities (e.g. Anchorage, Fairbanks, Juneau) may adopt and enforce their own energy codes locally.15 AAC 155.010 (Adoption of energy standard and amendments) — adopted by AHFC Resolution 18-31; effective 11/28/2018; filed with the Lieutenant Governor 1/22/2019; published Register 229 (April 2019). IPC — International Plumbing CodeNONE — ALASKA ADOPTS NO EDITION OF THE INTERNATIONAL PLUMBING CODE. ALASKA IS A UNIFORM PLUMBING CODE STATE: the statewide minimum plumbing standard is the UNIFORM PLUMBING CODE, 2018 EDITION (IAPMO), adopted by reference at 8 AAC 63.010 by the Department of Labor and Workforce Development with two Alaska revisions. The State Fire Marshal's own regulations expressly REPLACE every International-Plumbing-Code reference in the codes they adopt with the plumbing code adopted at 8 AAC 63.010.13 AAC 50.020 through 13 AAC 50.025 (Register 244, eff. 10/28/2022; authority AS 18.70.080) — State Fire Marshal adopts the 2021 IBC, IEBC, IMC, IFGC and IFC but substitutes for every International Plumbing Code reference the "Plumbing Code as adopted by 8 AAC 63.010, as amended from time to time"; 8 AAC 63.010 (Minimum plumbing standards; am 4/24/2020, Register 234; further am eff. 8/8/2025, Register 255; authority AS 18.60.705 and AS 18.60.710) — Dept. of Labor and Workforce Development adopts the UNIFORM PLUMBING CODE, 2018 EDITION with Alaska revisions. NO INTERNATIONAL PLUMBING CODE ADOPTION EXISTS IN ALASKA. · source ↗
IRC — International Residential CodeNONE — ALASKA ADOPTS NO EDITION OF THE INTERNATIONAL RESIDENTIAL CODE. There is no statewide residential building code in Alaska. The State Fire Marshal's codes (13 AAC 50) adopt the 2021 IBC, IEBC, IMC, IFGC and IFC but (i) EXCEPT detached one-, two- and three-family dwellings and townhouses of three stories or fewer from the IBC entirely, and (ii) affirmatively DELETE every cross-reference to the International Residential Code from the adopted IBC, IEBC, IMC and IFGC. Residential construction of three units or fewer is governed only by municipal ordinance where a municipality has adopted and enforces one, and by nothing at all in the unorganized borough. The only statewide residential requirement of any kind is the Alaska Building Energy Efficiency Standard (BEES, 15 AAC 155.010, 2018 IECC base), and BEES binds only where AHFC or other state financial assistance is involved.13 AAC 50.020 through 13 AAC 50.025 (Register 244, eff. 10/28/2022; authority AS 18.70.080) — NO INTERNATIONAL RESIDENTIAL CODE ADOPTION EXISTS IN ALASKA; 13 AAC 50.020 excepts "Detached one-, two-, and three-family dwellings" and townhouses of three stories or fewer from the adopted 2021 IBC, and Chapter 1 of each adopted code is revised by deleting all references to the International Residential Code (IRC). Related: 13 AAC 50.075 (deferred jurisdiction to municipalities); 15 AAC 155.010 (AHFC Building Energy Efficiency Standard, the only statewide residential standard, and financing-conditioned). · source ↗
NEC — National Electrical Code (NFPA 70)2020 NEC (NFPA 70) per the administering division; SEE amendments -- THE DEPARTMENT CONTRADICTS ITSELF AND THE 2020 ADOPTION INSTRUMENT COULD NOT BE READ8 AAC 70.025(a) ("Minimum electrical standards"), Alaska Administrative Code, Department of LABOR AND WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT, Division of Labor Standards and Safety, Mechanical Inspection -- NOT the Department of Public Safety / State Fire Marshal, whose 13 AAC 50 codes merely point at this section. Authority AS 18.60.580 and AS 18.60.600. Companion subsection 8 AAC 70.025(b) adopts the National Electrical Safety Code (ANSI C2). *** EDITION IS THE ADMINISTERING DIVISION'S OWN CURRENT STATEMENT, NOT A READ OF THE AMENDING INSTRUMENT. The division's Mechanical Inspection page (labor.alaska.gov/lss/mihome.htm, read first-hand 2026-09-26) lists verbatim "8 AAC 70.025(a) 2020 National Electric Code NFPA 70" and "8 AAC 70.025(b) 2017 National Electric - Safety Code ANSI C2-2017". THE SAME DEPARTMENT'S OWN PUBLISHED REGULATION BOOKLET STILL SERVES THE 2017 NEC -- see amendments. The rulemaking that moved 8 AAC 70.025(a) from the 2017 to the 2020 NEC WAS NOT LOCATED, so its Register number and effective date are unknown and verified_at is LEFT NULL BY DESIGN. · source ↗
