Re-roof permit checklist — New Orleans, Louisiana

Assembled from New Orleans’s own published permit rules. Every line below is quoted from a city document and linked to it. Nothing here is generated, estimated, or inferred from another jurisdiction.

Do you need a permit?

New Orleans requires a permit for a re-roof.

When a permit is not required

Ordinance 30,235 MCS requires a separate residential re-roofing permit for any roof replacement work affecting 50 percent or more of the roof. Minor roofing work, defined as less than 50 percent replacement, is exempt from permitting unless it meets other criteria that would otherwise require a permit. The residential re-roofing permit applies to single- and two-family homes only. Commercial roofing projects, meaning properties with three or more family units and business uses, cannot use the re-roofing permit and must apply for a structural or non-structural renovation permit.
