Retaining wall permit checklist — Cary, North Carolina

Assembled from Cary’s own published permit rules. Every line below is quoted from a city document and linked to it. Nothing here is generated, estimated, or inferred from another jurisdiction.

Do you need a permit?

Cary requires a permit for a retaining wall.

When a permit is not required

A retaining wall requires no permit or design professional when the grade within 15 feet of the rear of the wall is not more than 5 feet above the grade level at the front of the retaining wall base, provided the wall does not meet any of the other permit conditions.
