Salt Lake County requires a permit for a deck.
The district's Residential Deck & Patio Plan Submittal Guide states that in Utah, standard building permits are not required for ground-level patios or low decks less than 30 inches above grade that do not require guardrails; the district's Do I Need a Building Permit page separately exempts a deck or platform that is less than 18 inches above the adjoining ground, under 200 square feet and not attached to the dwelling, with the location of the structure still requiring Planning/Zoning Division approval.
