Do you need a permit?
Sandy requires a permit for general building work.
Sandy publishes a list of projects that skip the permit, and cautions that the list is not exhaustive. It covers fences up to seven feet; detached single-story accessory buildings - tool sheds, storage sheds, playhouses and the like - at 200 square feet of floor area or less; finish and surface work such as paint, wallpaper, tile, carpet, cabinetry and countertops; pool kits sitting wholly above ground where the water is shallower than 24 inches and capacity stays at 5,000 gallons or under; and retaining walls of four feet or less. Walkways and driveways are on the list too, but they call for a Public Works permit instead.
