Do you need a permit?
West Valley City requires a permit for general building work.
Work that does not require a building permit includes decks or platforms less than 30 inches above the adjoining ground, detached accessory structures of 200 square feet or less and one story in height, driveways and patios without roof coverings, fences up to 6 feet high built of concrete, masonry, plastic or wood, replacing defective plumbing fixtures with equivalent fixtures, replacing electrical lights and receptacles with equivalent devices, and minor siding repairs using matching materials. The first four still require Planning and Zoning approval, and any work in the public sidewalk, curb, gutter or driveway approach requires a separate Public Works permit.
