Shed permit checklist — Norfolk, Virginia

Assembled from Norfolk’s own published permit rules. Every line below is quoted from a city document and linked to it. Nothing here is generated, estimated, or inferred from another jurisdiction.

Do you need a permit?

Norfolk requires a permit for a shed.

When a permit is not required

Detached accessory structures of 256 square feet or smaller, such as sheds and patios, are approved through a free zoning certificate instead of a building permit; a zoning certificate can only be issued for structures 256 square feet or smaller. The exemption does not extend to structures that exceed 256 square feet or are attached to the main building, which fall under the building permit, and some structures might require a building permit for other reasons.
