Section 629 — Rolled Erosion Control Products and Cellular Confinement Systems

Division 600 — Incidental Construction|PDF pages 769–774

AND CELLULAR CONFINEMENT SYSTEMS

Description

629.01This work consists of constructing and ins talling RECP and c ellular con finem ent syste ms.

629.02Definitions.

(a)Mulch control netting. A planar woven natural fiber or extruded geosynthetic mesh used as a temporary degradable RECP to anchor loose fiber mulches.

(b)Open weave textile. A temporary degradable RECP composed of processed natural or polymer yarns woven into a matrix, used to provide erosion control and facilitate vegetation establishment.

(c)Erosion control blanket. A temporary degradable RECP composed of processed nat ural or polymer fibers mechanically, structurally , or chemically bound together to form a continuous matrix, used to provide erosion control and facilitate vegetation establishment.

(d)Turf reinforcement mat. A permanent non- degradable RECP designed for critical hydraulic applications where design discharges exert velocities and shear stresses that exceed the limits of mature, natural vegetation.

Material

Construction Requirements

629.04General. Make the soil surface stable, f irm, and free of rocks and other obstructions. Install R ECP and cellular con finem ent system s according to the manufacturer’s recommendations and to the following minimum guidelines. Apply turf e stablish ment according to Section 625. In areas to be m owed soon after installation, use te mporary R ECP consi sting of rapidly degrading ne tting with a functional longevity of 3 months or l ess.

629.05Netting or Open Weave Textile (RECP, Types 1.A, 2.A, and 3.A). Apply mulch according to Subsection 625.08(a) . Imme diately after mulching, install netting or open weave textile according to Subsection 629.06.

629.06Erosion Control Blanket, Op en Weave Textile, and Turf Reinforcement Mat (RECP, Types 1.B, 1.C, 1.D, 2.B, 2.C, 2.D, 3.B, 4.A, 4.B, 5.A, 5.B, 5.C, 5.D, 5.E, and 5.F). Unless soil in-filling is required, co mplete turf establish ment work before installing RECP. If soil in-filling is required, first install RECP. Then apply seed and lightly brush or rake ¼ to ¾ inch of topsoil into the voids in the RECP leaving only the top netting exposed. Unroll the RECP parallel to the primary direction of flow and place it in direct contact with soil surface. Do not stretch or allow RECP to bridge ove r surface in consi stencies. Overlap edges of adja cent RECP by 3 to 4 inches or according to the plans. Use fasteners according to the plans and use enough fasteners to prevent se am separation. Overla p roll ends of joining RECP 6 inches or according to the plans in the direction of flow.

(a)Slope installations. At the top of slope , anchor the RECP by one of the followin g methods:

(1)Fasteners. Install the RECP 36 inches ove r the shoulder of the slope onto flat final grade. Secure with a sin gle row of fasteners on 12-inch centers or according to the plans.

(2)Anchor trench. Construct a 6- by 6- inch trench. Ext end the upslope te rminal end of the RECP 36 inches past the trench. Use fasteners on 12- inch centers to fast en the RECP into the trench or according to the plans. Back fill the trench and com pact the soil. Secure the terminal end with a single row of fasteners on 12-inch cen ters an d cover the end with soil. Apply turf establishment.

(3)Check slot. Instal l two rows of staples 4 inche s apart on 4- inch cente rs across the top edge of the RE CP. Drive fasteners fl ush wi th so il surface. Securely fasten RECP to the soil by ins talling fasteners at a mini mum rate of 1.5 per square yard.

(b)Channel installations. At the start of the chan nel, construct a full wi dth anchor trench acco rding to Subsection 629.06(a)(2) . Construct addi tional anchor t renches or check slots at intervals along the channel re ach and at the channel end according to Subsection 629.06(a)(2) or (a)(3) and the manufacturer’s installation guidelines. Securely fasten RECP to the soil by inst alling staples at a m inimum rate of 2 per square yard. Significantly higher anchor rates may be necessary in sandy, loose, or wet soils and in severe applications. Repair damaged areas i mmediately by restoring soil to finish ed grade, reapplying turf e stablish ment, and replacing the RECP.

629.07Cellular Confinement Systems. Excavate to the depth of the cellular con finement system and smooth and compact the slope . Install the top of the system flush or lower than the adjacent slope. Expand the ge ocell down the slope. Connect adjacent g eocell sections w ith hog rings or st aples in every other cell. Anchor the system with wooden stakes across the top at every other cell. Repeat the anchoring pa ttern in every tenth row and in the bottom row. Drive stakes to a minimum embedment of 12 inches below the base of the cellular confin ement layer. Backfill the cells with material as shown in the plans. Co mpact the material within each cell. Apply turf establish ment according to Section 625, where shown in the plans.

629.08Acceptance. Material for RECP and cellular confinement system will be evaluated under Subsections 106.02 and 106.03. Installation of RECP and cellular con finem ent sys tems will be evaluated under Subsections 106.02 and 106.04. Material for topsoil will be evaluated under Subsection 106.02. Placing topsoil will be evaluated under Subsections 106.02 and 106.04. Turf establish ment will be evaluate d under Section 625.
