565.01 Description.
Provide and install expansion/contraction joints as specified and in accordance with the manufacturer’s written requirements. Provide and install the new bridge expansion joint system after paving on the bridge has been c ompleted. Obtain the services of one of the following applicators or an Engineer -approved equal:

565.02 Materials.
A.Binder Material. Provide premixed, premeasured polymer asphalt expansion joint binder material and aggregate. Ensure joint binder material meets the requirements in Table 565.02- 1. Ensure aggregate is crushed, double washed, and dried granite, basalt, or orthoquartzite and is premixed with binder material. C.Backer Rod. Provide backer rod that is a closed cell, foam expansion joint filler capable of withstanding the polymer - modified asphalt placement temperature.
D.Bridging Plate. Provide a bridging plate that is 10- gauge galvanized steel 6 t o 8 inches wide and 24 inches long or in accordance with the joint system manufacturer’s written specificatio ns.
E.Location Spikes. Use 16D common nails for location spikes.
F.Test and Materials Acceptance Requirements. Submit certif ication that the binder, backer rod, and bridging plate meet the requirements specified when tested using the required test method in Table 565.02- 1. Submit the certification at least 4 weeks before expansion system installation.
565.03 Construction Requirements.
A.Technical Representative. Ensure the asphalt ic plug joint manufacturer’s representative is present during joint installation.
B.Sawing and Surface Preparation . After paving operations are complete, transversely saw cut the full depth of the overlay centered over the joint opening, unless otherwise specified. Remove material, including waterproofing material, between saw cuts to form the blockout. Thoroughly clean and dry exposed concrete , steel, and cut surfaces within the blockout using compressed air and a hot -compressed air lance. If there is an interruption due to weather or other causes, repeat the operation with the lance immediately before the binder coat operation. Dry 6 inches of road surface on each side of the joint blockout to obtain a suitable surface for bituminous adhesion.
C.Binder. Heat the binder to at least 390°F in a double oil -jacketed melter. Ensure melter is equipped with a continuous agitation system, temperature controls, and calibrated thermometers to maintain the binder at the manufacturer’s recommended temperature. Prevent binder from being heated above 410°F or allowed to exceed 390°F for more than 1 hour.
D.Backer Rod Placement . Seal the expansion joint gap with a backer rod. Seal gaps less than ¼ inch wide by pouring hot binder into the gap without the use of the backer rod. First fill gaps of ¼ inch or wider with a backer rod and cut to approximately 25 percent greater in diameter than the existing gap. Install the backer rod to an optimum 1 inch below the top of the existing gap. for Highway Construction Page 428 of 71 5 Overfill the gap with the heated binder material to allow the binder to flow out onto the floor of the blockout. This will form a flexible bond breaker between the floor of the joint blockout and the bridging plate.
E.Bridging Plate. Center the bridging plate over the existing joint and bed into the hot binder. Butt joint the bridging plates to accommodate the entire joint length. Secure the bridging plate with location spikes through the drill holes in the plate. Seal butt joints with hot binder and allow binder to setup before the next operation.
F.Binder Coat. Seal prepared, exposed surfaces within the joint blockout with heated binder. Pour the hot binder over the floor area of the joint bridging plate and spread to coat exposed joint cavity areas. Ensure binder is at least ⅛ inch thick on the bottom of the joint cavity with areas of greater thickness where surface irregularities exist. The binder application temperature must be between 350°F and 390°F.
G.Maintenance of Traffic. Facilitate traffic maintenance by installing the joint in 2 half -width phases. During phase 1, install approximately half the total joint. During phase 2, remove at least 2 inches of the phase 1 joint at or near the centerline, with the rest of the joint installed. Schedule operations so all lanes can be open to traffic during non-working hours.
H.Testing. Submit certification showing binder compliance with the required material properties.
565.04 Method of Measurement.
The Engineer will measure acceptably completed work for asphaltic plug expansion joint system by the cubic foot.
565.05 Basis of Payment .

566.01 Description.
Provide and install neoprene seals as specified. Prepare all surfaces in contact with new neoprene seals.
566.02 Materials.
Provide neoprene seals and adhesive as specified or an approved equal and as specified in 704.04.
566.03 Construction Requirements.
Before installing joint seal, clean joints of asphalt filler, old expansion materials/devices, bituminous material, dirt, grease, and other deleterious material. Clean joints over the total area of the blockout or opening to receive the seal. During cleaning operations, prevent debris, cleaning materials, and solutions from entering waterways. Ensure the joints are sound, clean, dry, and frost free. Submit compression seal expansion joint opening size dimensions and temperature at the time of measurement to the Engineer for approval before ordering materials. All components and materials will be in accordance with the manufacturer’s written instructions and Engineer approved. Each neoprene seal will be one continuous piece between face of curbs and installed as specified and in accordance with the manufacturer’s written instructions. Sandblast clean expansion joint surfaces immediately before seal installation.
566.04 Method of Measurement.
The Engineer will measure acceptably completed work as follows:
1.Compression seal expansion joint by the foot.
2.If the required size of the joint seal differs from plan, additional materials will be measured by the contingency amount (force account ) (109.03.C.5) .
566.05 Basis of Payment .
