582PATCH AND REPAIR OF CONCRETE

582.01 Description.

A.Concrete Surface. Repair and patch spalls, scaling, delaminations, honeycombing, and other deteriorated concrete on the surface of the girders, deck underside, pier caps, columns and abutments, including removal of debris from pier cap seats and abutment seats as specified and directed.
B.Concrete Deck . Repair spalls and delaminations in the bridge deck including determining the working areas by chain dragging or other approved method, preparing the concrete surface, repairing metal reinforcement , and applying the patching material.

582.02 Materials.

A.Preparation of Concrete Surfaces. Use material for patching and repairing the concre te surfac es that is cementitious, fast setting, non- sag, non- metallic repair mortar containing a corrosion inhibitor and meets the following requirements:
1.Compressive strength: 4,500 psi minimum at 28 days, in accordance with ASTM C109.
2.Bond strength: slant shear: 1,500 psi minimum at 28 days, in accordance with ASTM C882.
3.Drying shrinkage: less or equal to 0.10 percent, in accordance with ASTM C157 .
4.Permeability will be 2,000 coulombs or lower at 28 days, in accordance with ASTM C1202.
5.Freeze- thaw resistance will have a durability factor of 90 percent or higher after at least 300 cycles, in accordance with ASTM C666.
6.Coefficient of thermal expansion: between 5.3x 10- 6/°F and 6.4 x 10- 6/°F, in accordance with ASTM C5 31 (optional). Submit certified test results from an independent lab for products not on the QPL showing the proposed products meet the specifications. Obtain the Engineer’s approval before use.
B.Concrete Deck . Use material for patching and repairing the concrete surfaces that is cementitious, fast setting, non- sag, non- metallic repair mortar, and meets the requirements of ASTM C928, Type R3. Extend repair mortar as required using thoroughly washed and cleaned pea gravel. The Engineer will accept materials meeting the specified criteria with a manufacturer’s certification as specified in 106.04.

582.03 Construction Re quirements.

Meet the manufacturer’s written instructions for application of mortars. Removed materials are the Contractor’s property and must be properly disposed of. for Highway Construction Page 455 of 71 5 A. Preparation of Concrete Surfaces. Mark out and score removal areas to a depth of ½ inch with a dry concrete saw. Exercise care to prevent damage to the existing reinforcement. Remove deteriorated, loose, or unsound concrete to a minimum depth of ½ inch or whatever additional depth is required to reach sound concrete using jackhammers with a nominal rating of 15 pounds or less and held at an angle of 45° or less from the concrete surface. Sandblast the cavity and the immediate surrounding concrete area to remove dirt, oil, grease, pai nt, corr osion deposits , dust, laitance, and bond- inhibiting mate rials. Prepare surface of cavity by mechanical scarification or sandblasting to provide a minimum surface profile of plus or minus ⅛ inch.

B.Existi ng Reinforcing Steel . If any reinforcement is or becomes exposed during the removal of unsound concrete and the bond between concrete and reinforcement has been destroyed, remove at least ¾ inch of concrete from around that reinforcement. Patch material bonds to the entire periphery of the exposed steel reinforcing bars. If any exposed reinforcement is damaged, broken, or has lost more than 25 percent of its section, remove at least ¾ inch of concrete from around that reinforcement to allow replacement of the damaged bar or splicing a new bar to the damaged bar as directed. Properly embed or splice replacement or supplemental bars.
C.Inspection. Complete final surface preparat ion sufficiently before the mortar placement to allow the Engineer to inspect areas before repair. Sound the repaired areas with a sounding bar or hammer, after sufficient setting time and correct hollowness, by removing and replacing the unbonded patch at no additional cost to the Department. The E ngineer must be present during the sounding inspection.
D.Finish. Match the texture of the existing surface and ensure the finished surface is flush with the existing surface.

582.04 Method of Measurement.

The Engineer will be measure acceptably completed work by the square f oot of the repaired concrete area.

582.05 Basis of Payment .

SF The cost of replacement or supplemental bars is incidental . for Highway Construction Page 456 of 71 5 SECTION 583 – SUPERSTRUCTURE JACKING

583.01 Description.

Furnish materials, labor, tools, equipment, and incidentals necessary to jack the superstructure for repairing girder ends and abutments or piers directly below the girder as specified and as dir ected. Design the jacking system and temporary shoring, shims, and any other incidentals. Construct the jacking system, monitor the girder displacements, maintain the jacking system, and remove all temporary supports upon completion.

583.02 Materials.

583.03 Construction Requirements.

Submit plans and design calculations for the proposed jacking system, temporary shoring, and shims for approval before beginning this work. The plans and calculations must be prepared, signe d, and sealed by an Idaho licensed professional engineer. Approval requires up to 15 calendar days starting from the date of receiving the submittals or re- submittals to the date that they are returned. Design the jacking system and temporary shoring for the loads as specified . Ensure that superstructure components and attachments can freely move to accommodate the full range of the anticipated vertical movement. Prepare separate submittals for each bridge. Provide a hydraulically -operated jacking system capable of simultaneously raising all girders of a superstructure element by an equal amount and at a uniform rate. Supply each jack with a gauge for monitoring the jacking load applied to the superstructure. Support the superstructure on temporary shoring and shims so the hydraulic fluid does not support the weight of the superstructure when the girders are in the raised position. The maximum difference in lift between adjacent girders is not to exceed 1/8 inch. Repair any damage to the superstructure or substructure elements resulting from the jacking operation at no cost to the Department. Do not lower the girders back down on the pier cap or abutment seat until the repair concrete has reached 80 percent of compr essive strength. Maintain the jacking equipment in a good state of repair. Equipment must not have damaged hoses, fittings, lines, or tanks that may release pollutants into the work area.

583.04 Method of Measurement.

The Engineer will measure acceptably completed work by the lump sum.

583.05 Basis of Payment .
