701.01 General Requirements.
Provide cement as specified. Portland Cement .................................................................................. AASHTO M 85 Type I, II, or III Blended Hydraulic Cement ....................................................... AASHTO M 240 Type IP, IL, IT, or IS
A.Portland Cement Portland Cement Type I (General Purpose), Type II (Moderate Sulfate Resistance), or Type III (High Ear ly Strength) according to AASHTO M85 . Obtain approval before using Type III cement other than for precast stringers. Use the product of only 1 batch plant or other brand and type of portland cement in a single structure component (e.g., abutments, columns, stringers, deck ). The Contractor may use limestone additions of up to 5.0 percent by mass of cement, provided the chemical and physical requirements of the finished cement meet AASHTO M85. Use naturally occurring limestone, consisting of at least 70 percent by mass of 1 or more of the mineral forms of calcium carbonate (C aCO 3). Include the C aCO 3 content of the limestone, the carbon dioxide (CO 2) content, and calculated limestone content of the cement in the manufacturer’s mill test report. Calculate the limestone content in portland cement in accordance with ASTM C150 and tested in accordance with ASTM C114.
B.Blended Hydraulic Cement Blended Hydraulic Cement per AASHTO M240 (ASTM C595), Type IP( ≤40) (portland -pozzolan cement), IL(≤10) (portland- limestone cement), Type IT (ternary blended cement), or Type IS( ≤20) (Portland blast - furnace slag cement). Maximum cont ent of limestone may vary by 2.5 percent , the maximum all owed variation in AASHTO M240 . For IL( ≤10), use naturally occurring limestone , consisting of at least 70 percent by mass of 1 or more of the mineral forms of calcium carbonate (CaCO3). Include the CaCO3 content of the limestone, the carbon dioxide (CO2) content, and calculated limestone content of the cement in the manufacturer’s mill test report. Calculate the limestone content in blended hydraulic cement in accordance with ASTM C595 and tested in accordance with ASTM C114 (AASHTO T105).
702.01 Asphalt .
Provide asphalt binder that meets AASHTO M 320, except as follows: 1.When polymer modification is specified or when the sum of the grade designation values exceed 90, perform the AASHTO T 301 test at 77°F (25°C) on residue from the rolling thin film oven test (RTFOT). The binder must have at least 50 percent elastic recovery.
2.On PAV conditioned material, the Dynamic She er AASHTO T 315 G* sin δ testing value will be 5,000 kPa maximum. Provide asphalt for a specified use from 1 supplier. If a change of supplier for asphalt binder is proposed or if blending of asphalt binder from more than 1 supplier is proposed, the Engineer will require mix design testing and verification before approved for use.
