526CONCRETE BARRIER

526.01 Description This work shall consist of the furnishing, constructing, erecting,

setting, resetting, and removal of concrete barrier and associa ted elements in accordance with these specifications, the Standard Details and the lines a nd grades shown on the Plans or established by the Resident. The types of concrete barrier are designated as follows: Temporary Concrete Barrier Type I Double faced removable concr ete barrier of the shape shown on the Plans. Permanent Concrete Barrier Type II Double face barrier of a sh ape shown on the Plans. Permanent Concrete Barrier Type IIIa Single face barrier 32 in ches high of a shape shown on the Plans. Permanent Concrete Barrier Type IIIb Single face barrier 42 in ches high of a shape shown on the Plans. Permanent Concrete Transition Barrier Barrier of various heigh ts joining steel bridge rail to steel guardrail. Permanent Texas Classic Rail Barrier, either traffic rail or s idewalk rail, as shown on the Plans.

526.02 Materials a. Concrete Concrete shall meet the provisions of Section 502, Structural Concrete, and

Portland cement shall conform to the requirements of AASHTO M85 , Type I, II, or III. Concrete for permanent barriers shall be Class LP, in accordanc e with Section 502.05, Composition and Proportioning. Concrete for temporary barriers shall be Portland cement concre te with a minimum compressive strength of 2,500 psi. The Department reserves the right to take test core samples from the barriers in accordance with ASTM C42. Average compressive test strengths below 2,500 psi will result in rejection of the barri ers.

b.Reinforcing Steel Reinforcing s teel shall meet the requirem ents of Section 503, Reinforcing Steel.
c.Structural Steel Plate steel shall meet the requirements s pecified in Section 713.01, Structural Steel. Hot dipped galvanizing of plate steel shall be in accordance with AASHTO M111 (ASTM A123). 5-154
d.Bolts Bolts shall meet the requirements specified in Sectio n 713.02, High Strength Bolts.
e.Connecting Pin for Temporary C oncrete Barrier For all proje cts on the NHS, including the Interstate System, temporary concrete barriers mu st be connected using a 1-⅛ inch diameter rod with a washer and cotter pin on the bottom, p er Standard Detail 526(02), The Contractor has the option to use a hex nut and washer conne ction at the top of the rod, as shown on the Standard Detail , or the top of the rod may be h ooked over the top connector. The connecting pin must be smooth, not deformed, i. e., reinforcing bar may not be used, and shall meet the strength requirements of ASTM A36 s teel, minimum. For projects not on the NHS, tem porary concrete barriers must b e connected in accordance with Standard Detail 526(02), except that the top of the rod may be hooked over the top connector, instead of using a hex nut and washer. The connecting pin shall meet the strength requirements of ASTM A36 steel, minimum.

526.03 Construction Requirements Permanent Concrete barrier sh all be constructed in

accordance with the provisions of Standard Specification Sectio n 502.05, Composition and Proportioning, through Section 502.14, Curing Concrete, inclusi ve, with the following additions:

a.Permanent concrete barrier may be formed by cast-in-place or slip forming methods.
b.Concrete finish shall be equal to a steel form finish. c. Liquid membrane-forming compounds may be used for curing con crete barriers, if approved by the Resident. If a membrane-forming compound that contains fugitive dye or other agents which will discolor the concrete is used, t he curing compound shall be removed to the satisfaction of the Resident prior to F inal Acceptance. When the slip forming method is used, a dissipating curing comp ound shall be applied to the concrete during placement, and then wet curing shall procee d in accordance with Section 502. In addition to the foregoing methods of curing concrete, barrie r may be cured by an accelerated curing method using low-pressure steam or radiant h eat in a moist environment. Other methods of curing may be used if approved by the Resident . If called for, protective coating shall be applied in accordanc e with Standard Specification Section 515, Protective Coating for Concrete Surf aces. Temporary concrete barrier shall be generally free from fins an d porous areas and shall present a neat and uniform appearance. Permissible dimensional tolerances for all concrete barriers sh all be as follows:
a.Cross-sectional dimensions shall not vary from design dimen sions by more than ¼ inch. The vertical centerline shall not be out of plumb by mor e than ¼ inch. 5-155
b.Longitudinal dimensions shall not vary from the design dime nsions by more than ¼ inch per 10 feet of barrier section and shall not exceed ¾ inch es per section.
c.Location of anchoring holes shall not vary by more than ½ in ch from the dimensions shown in the concrete barrier details on the Plans.
d.Surface straightness shall not vary more than ¼ inch under a 10 foot straightedge.
e.The barrier shall have no significant cracking. Significan t cracking is defined as fractures or cracks passing through the section, or any continu ous crack extending for a length of 12 inches or more, regardless of position in the sect ion.

526.04 Method of Measurement Concrete Barrier Type II, IIIa, I IIb, and Texas Classic

Rail will be measured for payment by lump sum, complete in plac e. Temporary concrete barrier will be measured for payment by the lump sum. Lump sum measurement will include verification of the installation and r emoval of all concrete barrier required by the plans for the Contractor’s operations. The Contractor shall replace sections of temporary concrete bar rier damaged by the traveling public when directed by the Resident. Replacement se ctions will be measured for payment. Transition barrier will be measured by each barrier connecting bridge rail to guardrail, complete in place.

526.05 Basis of Payment The accepted quantities of Texas Class ic Rail, Type II, IIIa,

and IIIb concrete barrier will be paid for at the Contract lump sum price for the type specified, complete in place. The accepted quantities of Temporary Concrete Barrier Type I wi ll be paid for at the Contract lump sum price. Such payment shall be full compensati on for furnishing all materials, assembling, moving, resetting, transporting, tempora rily storing, and removing barrier, furnishing new parts as necessary, and all incidentals necessary to complete the work. Temporary barrier shall become the property of the Contractor u pon completion of the use of the barrier on the project, and shall be removed from th e project site by the Contractor. Transition barrier will be paid for at the Contract price each, complete in place. The accepted quantity of all types of concrete barrier, whether temporary or permanent, will be paid for at the lump sum or per each price, as applicab le, which payment shall be full 5-156 compensation for all materials, including reinforcing steel, st eel plates and hardware, equipment, labor and incidentals required, as necessary, to com plete the work. 527.01 Description The Contractor shall furnish and install Wo rk Zone Crash Cushions

as specified in Special Pr ovision 652 or as directed by the Res ident.

527.02 Materials Work Zone Crash Cushions must comply with MASH 16. Work Zone

Crash Cushions shall be selected from Department’s Qualified Pr oducts List of Crash Cushions / Impact Attenuators, or an approved equal.

527.03 Construction Requirements Work Zone Crash Cushions shal l be provided and

installed in accordance with the manufacturer's recommendations for the specific application and the posted speed limit. Work Zone Crash Cushions, which are damaged or destroyed, shall be repaired or replaced promptly. The Contractor shall have on hand one compl ete set of replacements.

527.04 Method of Measurement The Department will measure Work Zone Crash

Cushions by the Unit, complete in place and accepted. A cluste r of Portable Crash Barrels or a cluster of Energite III sand barrels is considered a Unit. Each N-E-A-T or Adiem II is considered a Unit.

527.05 Basis of Payment The Department will pay for the accept ed quantity of Work

Zone Crash Cushions at the Contract unit price for each Unit, w hich price shall be full compensation for furnishing and placing the Work Zone Crash Cus hion, including all incidentals and for resetting as many times as required. Replacements for the Work Zone Crash Cushions damaged beyond fu nctionability by collisions will be paid for as new Work Zone Crash Cushions, an d the removal of the impacted devices and debris will be considered incidental to th e replacement units. Replacement Work Zone Crash Cushions on hand, but unused, will not be paid for directly.
