6-34 routine maintenance requirements. Concrete shall meet the requ irements of Section 608.021, Sidewalk Materials, of this specification.
608.03 Sidewalk Construction
608.031 Portland Cement Concrete Sidewalks
a.Excavation Excavation shall be to the depth and width that will permit the installation and bracing of the forms. The foundation shall be shaped and c ompacted to a firm even surface conforming to the section shown in the Contract Documen ts. All soft and yielding material shall be removed and replaced with acceptable material .
b.Forms Forms shall be of wood or metal and shall extend for the full depth of the concrete. All forms shall be true, free from warp and of suffi cient strength to resist the pressure of the concrete without springing. Bracing and stakin g of forms shall be such that the forms remain in both horizontal and vertical alignment unti l their removal.
c.Placing Concrete The foundation shall be thoroughly moisten ed immediately prior to placing the concrete. The proportioning, mixing and placing of the concrete shall be in accordance with the requirements of Section 502, Structural Con crete.
d.Finishing The sidewalk surface shall receive a float finish , in accordance with Section 502, Structural Concrete. Additionally, a light broom finish shall be applied, perpendicular to the sidewalk. No plastering of the mortar wil l be permitted. All outside edges of the slab and all joints shall be finished with a sidew alk edging tool, two inches in width, with a ¼ inch radius lip.
e.Joints Joints shall be lo cated as shown in the Contract Doc uments. Slabs shall be placed alternately and the joints coated with an approved bitum inous material before placing the adjacent slab. When a concrete sidewalk is constructed adjacent to a building, retaining wall, or other fixed structure, preformed joi nt filler, ¼ inch thick, shall be used between the slab and the structure.
f.Curing Concrete shall be cur ed for at least 72 hours. Curi ng shall be by moist burlap or mats, or by application of a curing compound listed on the D epartment’s Qualified Products List. The curing compound shall be applied continuous ly by approved mechanical pressure spraying or distributing equipment at a rate necessary to obtain an even, continuous membrane, meeting the manufacturer’s recommendations, but at a rate of not less than 1 gallon per 200 ft2 of surface; at a minimum, two coats shall be applied using a p ressurized sprayer, with the first coat being applied within 15 minutes af ter finishing is complete and the second coat being applied within 30 minutes of, and at righ t angles to, the first; hand- pump sprayers, rollers or brushes shall not be used. During th e curing period, all traffic, both pedestrian and vehicular, shall be excluded. Vehicular tr affic shall be excluded for such additional time as may be deemed necessary by the Resident . 6-35 608.032 HMA Pavement Sidewalk

b.Base Course Base course material shall be placed as shown i n the Contract Documents and each layer thoroughly compacted.
c.Placing HMA Sidewalk Material HMA sidewalk material shall b e placed on the compacted base course in two cour ses to provide the required de pth when rolled. Compaction shall be by a power roller having a minimum total we ight of 1 ton with a minimum of 65 lb/in of width of the drive roll or by satisfacto ry power vibratory compaction equipment. In areas inaccessible to other equipment , hand tamping will be permitted. In any case, the HMA sidewalk material shall be uni formly compacted. 608.033 Brick Sidewalk (Remove and Rebuild) This work shall co nsist of the following, unless otherwise indicated in the Contract Documents : Removal, storage, and disposal, as necessary, of existing brick; shaping and compacti ng the foundation to a firm, even surface, conforming to the section shown in the Contract D ocuments- all soft and yielding material shall be removed and replaced with acceptable material; regrading, compacting and furnishing of Aggregate for Untreated Surface Co urse and Leveling Course, as necessary; furnishing of new or re-used brick to match the existing sidewalk; furnishing and applying joint filler material (sand) and compacting with w ater and refilling until joint material is at the same surface as the brick; all necessary gra ding and restoration at the back edge of sidewalk; removal and disposal of unused materials and debris. 608.034 Brick Sidewalk Excavation shall be to the required dep th and width and the foundation shaped and compacted to a firm, even surface, confor ming to the section shown in the Contract Documents. All soft and yielding material shal l be removed and replaced with acceptable material. 608.035 Construct Sidewalk This work shall consist of excavati ng the existing ground and placing and compacting new aggregate, as necessary, to buil d the sidewalk in the new location as shown in the Contract Documents. 608.036 Regrading Sidewalk This work shall consist of removing the existing pavement, adding and compacting new aggregate, as necessary, an d regrading the gravel base to conform to the grading limits shown in the Contract Doc uments.
608.04 Detectable Warnings Construction New plates shall be se t square with the curb
edge and the base of the truncated domes shall be set flush wit h adjacent surfaces to allow for proper drainage. All concrete required for detectable warn ings shall be cured in accordance with Section 608.031(f), Curing, of this specificati on. 6-36 608.041 Existing Concrete Curb Ramps Existing concrete shall b e saw-cut to a dimension 4 inches larger than the detectable warning plates. New concrete shall be placed in the resulting opening and finished, and the new plates set i nto the wet concrete, according to the manufacturer’s recommendations. 608.042 New Concrete Curb Ramps New concrete shall be placed a nd finished for the ramp, and the new plates set into the wet concrete, according t o the manufacturer’s recommendations. 608.043 New HMA Pavement Ramps HMA pavement shall be saw cut a nd removed to provide an opening that will allow for the dimensions of the ca st iron plate surrounded by an additional 4 inch border on all si des of the plate. New concre te shall be placed in the resulting opening and finished, and the new plates set into the wet concrete, according to the manufacturer’s recommendations.
608.05 Method of Measurement Construct sidewalk, regrading sid ewalk, concrete
sidewalk, brick sidewalk (remove and rebuild), brick sidewalk a nd brick driveway aprons will be measured by the square yard of finished surface. HMA p avement sidewalks will be measured by the ton of HMA mixture placed. Detectable warning plates will be measured for payment by the square foot of actual plate area, only, not including the surrounding concrete.
608.06 Basis of Payment The accepted quantities of sidewalk wi ll be paid for at the
Contract Unit Price per square yard for concrete sidewalk, bric k sidewalk and brick driveway aprons, and per ton for HMA pavement sidewalk, comple te and in place. Excavation will be paid for under Section 203, Excavation and E mbankment. Base and subbase material will be paid for under Section 304, Aggregate Base and Subbase Course. HMA mixture for sidewalks will be paid for under Section 403, H ot Bituminous Pavement. Expansion joint material, joint filler, and other related items will not be paid for separately but shall be considered incidental to related Pay Items. For construct sidewalk, payment will be for excavation, new agg regate and necessary incidentals to bring the grade t o pre-pave grade. For regradin g sidewalk, payment will be for removing existing pavement, regrading existing gravel base and adding new material, as necessary. For brick sidewalk (remove and rebuild), payment will be for al l work outlined in Section 608.033, Brick Sidewalk (Remove and Rebuild), except th at any necessary excavation will be paid for under Section 203, Excavation and E mbankment, any necessary base and subbase material will be paid for under Section 304, A ggregate Base and Subbase Course, and any specified HMA mixture will be paid for under Se ction 403, Hot Bituminous Pavement. The accepted quantity of detectable warnings will be paid for a t the Contract Unit Price per square foot for all labor, materials, and equipment require d to install the detectable
