SECTION 608 - SIDEWALKS
608.01 Description This work shall consist of furnishing all m aterials for and
constructing sidewalks of either Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA) pavement , brick or concrete, and curb ramp detectable warning plates with truncated domes, in co nformance with this specification and all other applicable Contract Documents.
608.02 Materials, General All new Portland cement concrete sur faces shall have
protective coating applied in accordance with Section 515, Prot ective Coating for Concrete Surfaces. 608.021 Sidewalk Materials Materials for sidewalks shall meet the requirements specified in the following Sections of Division 700, Materials: Aggregate for Untreated Surface Course and Leveling Course 703 .10 B r i c k f o r P a v i n g 704.02 Preformed Expansion Joint Filler 705.01 W e l d e d S t e e l W i r e F a b r i c 709.02 Portland cement concrete shall be Class A and meet the requirem ents of Section 502, Structural Concrete. HMA pavement shall meet the requirements of Section 403, Hot Bi tuminous Pavement. New aggregate required to build new sidewalk shall meet the req uirements of Standard Specification 703.06(b), Aggregate for Base and Subbase, Type D . New aggregate for regrading existing sidewalk shall meet the requirements of Sect ion 703.10, Aggregate for Untreated Surface Course and Leveling Course. Standard compacting will be required for all sidewalk areas whe re six inches or more of new or disturbed aggregate is placed. Where less than six inch es is placed, compaction will be achieved by use of a plate compactor, hand tamp or other mea ns approved by the Resident. 608.022 Detectable Warnings Materials Detectable warning plate s shall be new cast iron, as manufactured by one of the manufacturers listed on Dep artment’s Qualified Products List of Detectable Warning Plates. Each plate shall ma tch the width of the ramp, unless otherwise indicated in the Contract Documents, and shall have a natural finish. Prior to starting this work, the Contractor shall submit to the Depar tment the name of the selected supplier, the manufacturer’s literature describing the product, installation procedures, and 6-34 routine maintenance requirements. Concrete shall meet the requ irements of Section 608.021, Sidewalk Materials, of this specification.
608.03 Sidewalk Construction
608.031 Portland Cement Concrete Sidewalks
a.Excavation Excavation shall be to the depth and width that will permit the installation and bracing of the forms. The foundation shall be shaped and c ompacted to a firm even surface conforming to the section shown in the Contract Documen ts. All soft and yielding material shall be removed and replaced with acceptable material .
b.Forms Forms shall be of wood or metal and shall extend for the full depth of the concrete. All forms shall be true, free from warp and of suffi cient strength to resist the pressure of the concrete without springing. Bracing and stakin g of forms shall be such that the forms remain in both horizontal and vertical alignment unti l their removal.
c.Placing Concrete The foundation shall be thoroughly moisten ed immediately prior to placing the concrete. The proportioning, mixing and placing of the concrete shall be in accordance with the requirements of Section 502, Structural Con crete.
d.Finishing The sidewalk surface shall receive a float finish , in accordance with Section 502, Structural Concrete. Additionally, a light broom finish shall be applied, perpendicular to the sidewalk. No plastering of the mortar wil l be permitted. All outside edges of the slab and all joints shall be finished with a sidew alk edging tool, two inches in width, with a ¼ inch radius lip.
e.Joints Joints shall be lo cated as shown in the Contract Doc uments. Slabs shall be placed alternately and the joints coated with an approved bitum inous material before placing the adjacent slab. When a concrete sidewalk is constructed adjacent to a building, retaining wall, or other fixed structure, preformed joi nt filler, ¼ inch thick, shall be used between the slab and the structure.
f.Curing Concrete shall be cur ed for at least 72 hours. Curi ng shall be by moist burlap or mats, or by application of a curing compound listed on the D epartment’s Qualified Products List. The curing compound shall be applied continuous ly by approved mechanical pressure spraying or distributing equipment at a rate necessary to obtain an even, continuous membrane, meeting the manufacturer’s recommendations, but at a rate of not less than 1 gallon per 200 ft2 of surface; at a minimum, two coats shall be applied using a p ressurized sprayer, with the first coat being applied within 15 minutes af ter finishing is complete and the second coat being applied within 30 minutes of, and at righ t angles to, the first; hand- pump sprayers, rollers or brushes shall not be used. During th e curing period, all traffic, both pedestrian and vehicular, shall be excluded. Vehicular tr affic shall be excluded for such additional time as may be deemed necessary by the Resident .
