SECTION 944 — LIGHTING FOR NIGHT WORK OPERATIONS 900-129 — LIGHTING FOR NIGHT WORK OPERATIONS
944.01 Description.
This work includes illuminating Work Zones, including but not limited to lane shifts, lane splits and lane drop areas and all other areas with channelization devices placed along the roadway to direct or restrict traffic. Illumination of Work Zones may include a combination of existing and proposed permanent lighting, temporary lighting, floodlighting and equipment -mounted lighting. Meet the requirements of the currently adopted MUTCD.
944.02 Materials.
Floodlights. Illumination of Work Zones may be achieved by using a combination of existing and proposed permanent highway lighting, Portable Light Plant Towers, Balloon Lighting, and Roadway Luminaires Mounted on Temporary Poles. When using Equipment mounted lighting, utilize balloon lighting to minimize glare for workers and motorists.
944.03 Construction Methods.
Plan of Operation. Before proceeding with operations that will require lighting, submit a shop drawing in accordance with Subsection 105.02. Ensure that the Shop Drawing includes field verified existing lighting location and measured luminescence if utilizing in the Work Zone. The lighting plan must minimize light intrusion to areas outside of the Work Zone. Illumination Standards. Maintain the following standards at all times during night operations. Illuminate the traveled way within the Work Zone to a minimum illumination of 5 foot candles measured on both the horizontal and vertical planes 6 in. above the surface in question. Locate all lighting to avoid shadows on the traveled way and prevent excessive glare to the motorist. Lighting to be located outside of the clear zone or at a location adequately protected from traffic. Power Sources. Provide power source of the type, size, and wattage output required to adequately energize the lighting equipment specified. Ensure the power source location and wiring comply with all applicable electrical codes and pertinent OSHA safety standards. Ensure the lighting fixtures and power source electrical rating are compatible. Inspection. Monitor the illumination on the Project as required from the Shop Drawing for conformance to the specifications. Substandard illumination in the Work Zone may be sufficient reason for the Engineer to direct stoppage of all work until the substandard situation is corrected.

900-130 SECTION 944 — LIGHTING FOR NIGHT WORK OPERATIONS Noncompliance relating to the illumination of the Work Zone or if safety considerations dictate, the Engineer may revoke the night -time operation for the Contract and assess fines with no additional time or costs to the Department. Furnish the Engineer, for the duration of the Project and at no additional compensation, a hand - held digital light meter, complete with instructions, capable of measuring 1 to 100 ft-candles. The light meter will be returned to the Contractor upon completion of the Project.
944.04 Method of Measurement.
Lighting for Night Work Operations will not be measured separately for payment.
944.05 Basis of Payment.
Lighting for Night Work Operations will not be paid for separately but is a subsidiary obligation, with the cost distributed among the Contract unit prices for items of work. This includes full compensation for all labor, materials, and equipment, including first placement, temporary storage, repositioning at different locations, fuel, electric power, batteries, maintenance, and all incidentals necessary to finish the work, complete and accepted to the satisfaction of the Engineer. Failure to Comply If, in the judgment of the Engineer, the Contractor fails to adequately install and/or safely maintain LIGHTING FOR NIGHT WORK OPERATIONS along any portion of the Project, the appropriate charge(s) in the Table of Fines in SECTION 110 will be deducted from monies due to the Contractor.
